College Aide (GIS)
Part-time position (35 hours per week). During the school year, College Aides may work up to 17 hours per week; full-time (35 hours) is permitted during the summer. Work location: 30-30 Thomson Avenue, Long Island City, NY 11101.
Applicants must be currently enrolled in an accredited college or graduate school and authorized to work full-time in the United States. The NYC Department of Design and Construction cannot sponsor or support any visa applications, including OPT/STEM, H-1B, F-1 practical training, or permanent residence sponsorship. Educational credentials must be from a U.S. Department of Education-recognized institution; foreign credentials require independent equivalency verification.
About the role
The Division of Infrastructure is seeking a graduate student College Aide to support the Engineering Support Services team with Geographic Information Systems (GIS). Reporting to the Chief, the role will assist the mapping team.
Responsibilities
- Conduct research on DEP live maps for sewer and water mains for capital projects.
- Map pedestrian ramps and catch basin locations to identify potential capital project conflicts.
- Prepare project maps for capital projects for stakeholders such as Communications and Policy, community boards, and elected officials, often with short turnaround times.
Requirements
- Matriculation at an accredited college or graduate school; employment is conditioned upon continuance as a student.
- For Assignment Level II (Information Technology): specific course of study in information technology, computer science, management information systems, data processing, or a closely related field, including or supplemented by 9 semester credits in an acceptable course of study.
- For Assignment Level III (Information Technology Fellow): specific course of study in information technology, computer science, management information systems, data processing, or other relevant area, including or supplemented by 9 semester credits in an acceptable course of study.
- Maximum tenure in the title of College Aide is 6 years.
- Students may not work more than half-time in any week when classes are in session but may work full-time during vacation periods.
Preferred Skills
- Preference for candidates with a major in civil engineering, computer science, Geographic Information Systems, or equivalent.
- Outstanding verbal and written communication skills in English.
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office; familiarity with AutoCAD or GIS is advantageous.
Pay
$17.50 – $21.90 per hour.
