About the Role
Under the supervision of the Business Office Manager, the Collector provides all responsibilities necessary for the successful operation of the Business Office Department at Arrowhead Orthopaedics. The role requires a high level of professionalism, discretion, and attention to detail, particularly when handling confidential patient and physician files.
The position is full-time (forty hours per week) with a schedule that may require flexibility to ensure efficient service. The employee will work no more than five days per week.
Responsibilities
- Review accounts per accounts receivable reports for unpaid claims (minimum 50-70 accounts per day, varying by desk assignment).
- Identify delinquent accounts, aging periods, and payment sources.
- Process delinquent accounts by contacting patients and third-party payers.
- Carry out collection procedures, including phone calls to patients and resubmitting claims to third-party payers.
- Review separate accounts receivable (AR) reports.
- Answer inquiries and messages from patients and insurance companies.
- Develop collection letters and resolve patient billing complaints.
- Research credit balances and implement adjustments to patient accounts.
- Allocate payments when Explanation of Benefits (EOBs) are received and assign payments according to contract.
- Contact insurance companies or third-party payers regarding payment status.
- Follow up with payers by making second requests, calls, or providing necessary information for payment (all efforts should be exhausted).
- Contribute to educational activities for staff.
- Answer inquiries from billers, collectors, posters, and clinical personnel regarding patient accounts.
- Perform other responsibilities as assigned by the Business Office Manager.
Requirements
- High school diploma or equivalent.
- Minimum of 2-5 years of experience in billing, preferably with a strong collection background.
- Ability to type 40 words per minute.
- Proficiency in operating computers, scanners, and software programs including Outlook.
- Excellent telephone etiquette and professional communication skills.
- Ability to work under strict deadlines and prioritize assigned accounts.
Physical Demands
- Requires sitting, walking, occasional stooping, reaching, and bending.
- Occasional lifting up to thirty pounds.
- Hearing must be within normal range for telephone and personal communication.
- Manual dexterity sufficient to operate keyboards and other office equipment.
Work Relationships
- Reports directly to the Business Office Manager and communicates progress, concerns, or expectations as needed.
- Interacts collegially and professionally with office and clinical staff to maintain a safe and pleasant work environment.
- Communicates professionally with outside claims representatives and patients, reflecting the office’s commitment to quality care and customer satisfaction.
