About the role

Support Quality Care. As a Coder in the UMSA Admin Department, you will transform medical diagnoses and procedures into accurate billing codes that drive proper reimbursement, compliance, and overall care quality. Whether you’re certified or working toward certification, your attention to detail helps ensure patients receive the care they need without unnecessary delays.

Responsibilities

• Accurately assign ICD‑10‑CM and CPT‑4 codes to all diagnoses and procedures based on medical documentation.
• Collaborate with providers to clarify documentation and ensure complete, compliant records.
• Complete coding within four business days of service (excluding weekends/holidays) to meet departmental goals.
• Maintain at least 95 % coding accuracy and adhere to regulatory and payer guidelines.
• Use electronic coding and abstracting tools efficiently to support accurate claim submission.
• Monitor workflow to avoid delays and notify leadership if work falls behind.
• Assist clinic staff by sharing coding updates and supporting process improvements.
• Perform additional duties as needed to support hospital operations.

Requirements

• High school diploma or equivalent (required).
• One year of hospital or clinic coding experience (preferred).
• Certification (CPC, CCS, CIC, or COC) required within two years of hire.
• Proficiency in Microsoft Office, Outlook, and EMR systems.
• Strong communication skills and attention to detail.
• Ability to work independently while supporting clinic staff with questions and education.
