Coder/Abstractor, CCS

About the role

The Coder/Abstractor, CCS at University Medical Center of El Paso is responsible for coding, sequencing, and abstracting patient records according to ICD-9-CM and CPT guidelines.

Responsibilities

• Analyzes code assignments for accurate DRG calculations to optimize reimbursement.
• Abstracts medical record information into hospital databases and registries for statistical and fiscal reporting.
• Queries physicians for clarification on medical documentation.
• Performs duties within established guidelines, exercising independent judgment.

Requirements

• Knowledge of Health Information Systems practices, procedures, and guidelines.
• Ability to analyze and solve problems.
• Ability to seek out new methods and principles to improve services.
• Ability to utilize verbal and written communication skills effectively.

Qualifications

• One year hospital outpatient coding experience required; inpatient coding experience preferred.
• Certified Coding Specialist (CCS) certification required.
• High school diploma or equivalent education.
