We are looking for a community-minded Code Enforcement Officer to support the City’s efforts to maintain safe, well-kept, and compliant neighborhoods in California. This contract position combines fieldwork, public interaction, and administrative coordination to address code-related concerns across residential and commercial areas.

Responsibilities

  • Review reported concerns and proactively assess potential violations related to zoning, property upkeep, public nuisance matters, health and safety standards, and animal-related issues.
  • Perform on-site evaluations at homes and businesses to document conditions, determine compliance status, and identify necessary follow-up actions.
  • Prepare and deliver formal enforcement documents, including warning notices, citations, and required corrective measures, in accordance with local regulations.
  • Explain applicable municipal requirements to community members and guide property owners and businesses toward timely resolution and voluntary compliance.
  • Maintain organized records of investigations through detailed notes, correspondence, photographs, and case updates within tracking systems.
  • Work closely with municipal staff, legal representatives, contractors, and external agencies to support enforcement activities and case resolution.
  • Contribute to nuisance abatement initiatives, animal control support efforts, and public-facing outreach activities that promote code awareness.
  • Compile documentation for administrative hearings or related proceedings and present factual testimony when cases move forward for review.

Requirements

  • Prior experience in code enforcement, inspections, municipal services, public safety, property management, or a closely related field is preferred.
  • Ability to read, interpret, and apply local codes, ordinances, and regulatory requirements with consistency and care.
  • Strong interpersonal skills with the ability to manage sensitive conversations, de-escalate conflict, and provide effective customer service.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office and experience using case tracking, records management, or similar administrative systems.
  • Solid administrative capabilities, including data entry, documentation, record maintenance, and general office support.
  • Comfortable handling phone-based and in-person interactions with residents, businesses, and other stakeholders in a courteous manner.
  • Valid California Driver’s License is required.
