About the role

The City of Delray Beach enforces Land Development Regulations, Code of Ordinances, Building Codes, and Standard Housing Codes. The position involves inspecting properties, testifying at Code Enforcement Board Hearings, issuing notices of violations, and interacting with the public.

Responsibilities

  • Enforce applicable sections of the Land Development Regulations, Housing Codes, and Code of Ordinances through inspection and review activities.
  • Testify at Code Enforcement Board Hearings and follow up on Code Enforcement Orders.
  • Issue notices of violations on public nuisance, housing code standards, zoning, and building codes, and abandoned vehicles.
  • Patrol assigned area and investigate complaints called in by the public.
  • Interact with the public for assistance in interpreting specific sections of the Land Development Regulations, Housing Codes, and Code of Ordinances.
  • Discuss with the public about code violations.
  • Foster positive employee relations and employee morale on a City-wide basis.

Requirements

  • High School graduation or equivalent diploma, supplemented by college credits in building, construction, or inspection techniques.
  • One year experience working with building codes, municipal codes, or as a Code Enforcement Officer preferred.
  • Must be Florida Association of Code Enforcement (F.A.C.E.) certified or obtain F.A.C.E. certification within 12 months from date of employment.
  • Must possess a valid Florida Driver's License with a good driving record.

Qualifications

  • Knowledge of municipal codes, housing codes, enforcement, and inspection techniques.
  • Knowledge of the City's policies, procedures, and practices.
  • Ability to interpret and apply policies.
  • Ability to use personal computers and office software such as Microsoft Word, Excel, and Outlook.
  • Ability to prioritize and manage routine, specialized, and complex assignments and problems.
  • Ability to communicate effectively in oral and written form.
  • Ability to work independently and adhere to established policies and procedures.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with employees and the general public.
  • Physical demands include sitting, talking, hearing, using hands, reaching, stooping, bending, and driving.

Supplemental Information

Physical Demands/Work Environment: The work environment is inside and outside, with possible slippery and uneven surfaces. The employee must occasionally lift and/or move up to 25 lbs. Specific vision abilities required include close vision and the ability to adjust focus. Works at heights (up to 10 feet).
