Code Enforcement Officer

Principal Duties

  • Protect the safety and health of citizens by ensuring compliance with health, safety, nuisance, traffic, and zoning ordinances.
  • Inspect, monitor, and investigate residential and commercial premises to ensure compliance with municipal ordinances and state and federal regulations.
  • Determine the nature of violations and/or unsafe conditions and steps necessary for compliance.
  • Advise and educate violators of required action.
  • Issue notices of violations and citations, as required.

Receive and Respond to Complaints

  • Receive and respond to complaints, inquiries, and/or reports relative to codes or alleged code violations.
  • Congduct investigations and provide recommendations for resolution.

Customer Information and Education

  • Provide customer information as needed on codes and negotiate solutions to problem areas.

Record Keeping and Documentation

  • Develop and maintain accurate records and documentation on all violations, investigations, inspections, enforcement actions and other job-related activities.

Case Preparation and Prosecution

  • Prepare cases and act as a witness for prosecution in Municipal Court, as needed.

Monitoring and Compliance

  • Monitor code enforcement cases to ensure compliance.

Public Education

  • Conduct and participate in public education forums.

GIS System Utilization

  • Utilize the GIS system to research and analyze property and code related data, generate maps, reports, and provide analysis, on an occasional basis or as requested.

Qualifications

  • High School diploma or GED equivalent.
  • Valid Texas Driver’s License.
  • Registered Code Enforcement Officer Certification, or the ability to obtain within eighteen (18) months of hire.
  • Ability to work shift that may include evenings and occasional weekends.
  • Ability to work independently, with limited supervision.

Preferred Knowledge

  • Knowledge of municipal codes and enforcement processes.
  • Knowledge of land subdivision, zoning, building, and sanitation codes.

  • Work Environment/Physical Demands: Indoor and outdoor environments; work independently; drive from site to site; incumbents may be exposed to noise, dust, and inclement weather conditions. Physical: Primary functions require sufficient physical ability to work in field environment; to stand, stoop, reach, bend, kneel, squat, climb ladders, and walk on uneven terrain, loose soil, and sloped surfaces; to lift and/or move objects weighting up to 25 lbs.
