About the role
The Land Use Division is seeking a customer-focused Code Compliance Officer to join the Code Compliance team within the Development Services Department. This role involves responding to complaints, conducting investigations, and enforcing city codes.
Responsibilities
- Timely responds to complaints of potential code violations.
- Acts as Duty Officer, handling intake and screening of new complaints and answering questions from internal and external customers.
- Conducts field investigations, gathers evidence, and talks with complainants, witnesses, and potential violators.
- Performs in-office research and communicates effectively with internal and external customers.
- Prepares and issues warnings, letters, correction notices, requests for voluntary compliance, notices of civil violation, staff reports, and presents at administrative hearings.
- Assists, debriefs, and supports the City Attorney’s Office for enforcement cases appealed or brought to superior court.
Requirements
- Graduation from an accredited four-year college or university with three or more years of progressively responsible related experience.
- Working knowledge of applicable laws, standards, and regulations relating to various land use, nuisance, and public safety codes and of inspection techniques.
Qualifications
- Knowledge and skills in preparing, organizing, and maintaining inspection field data reports and systems.
- Ability to write detailed staff reports and communicate enforcement actions and recommendations to a wide audience.
- Ability to manage complex assignments independently and make decisions or recommend course of action for consideration.
- Ability to work in a team environment and positively represent the City of Bellevue with a wide variety of customers and interest groups.
- Knowledge of code enforcement principles, practices, and methods as applicable to a municipal setting.
- Working knowledge of applicable laws, standards, and regulations relating to various land use, nuisance, and public safety codes and of inspection techniques.
Supplemental Information
A flexible/hybrid working schedule is available for this position after an orientation period working in the office after hire. Remote work for this position is subject to department's operational needs and will be discussed with candidates during the selection process. Full-time remote work is not an available option. Once hired, employees must reside in the State of Washington and within reasonable commuting distance to Bellevue City Hall.
