Pay
$21.71 - $25.01/hourly (DOE).
Schedule
Generally, 8:00am - 5:00pm; however must be able to work flexible and varied hours.

About the role
The principal function of this role is to perform a variety of code inspections for commercial, industrial, and residential properties to ensure compliance with ordinances, approved plans, specifications, regulations, and building codes. The work is performed under supervision, allowing for some independent judgment and initiative. Employees are expected to establish and maintain effective working relationships with supervisors, departmental personnel, local businesses, homeowners, contractors, engineers, and the general public. Duties are carried out at various properties and construction sites, often in diverse weather conditions and terrains.
Responsibilities
- Receives and responds to complaints regarding zoning violations, nuisances, weeds, abandoned vehicles, and other City code violations, investigating circumstances and identifying any violations to obtain compliance in a timely and courteous manner.
- Researches property ownership, variances, use permits, and other documentation, including maintaining records of inspections and correspondence.
- Assists in abatement of hazardous or public nuisances, which may include issuing citations for non-compliance and providing information to City legal staff as needed.
- Interprets and explains codes, regulations, and compliance conditions to property owners and other interested parties.
- Collaborates with police, fire, building, and other City staff on code compliance efforts.
- Responds to citizens' questions and comments in a courteous and timely manner.
- Keeps the immediate supervisor informed regarding work progress and any potential issues.
- Attends training sessions and workshops to remain current on principles and practices related to assigned work areas.
- Communicates information and states concerns in a clear and professional manner.
- Respects the opinion of others and demonstrates a reasonable relationship with employees, supervisors, and others.
- Accepts and adapts to changes in work assignments and procedures in a timely manner.
Requirements
- High School Graduate or General Education Degree (GED) required.
- 1 plus years of experience in explaining public rules and regulations or advanced related coursework, or any combination of experience and training which provides the equivalent scope of knowledge, skills, and abilities necessary to perform the work.
- Ability to operate or quickly learn to operate a personal computer using standard or customized software applications appropriate to assigned tasks and the ability and willingness to quickly learn and put to use new skills and knowledge brought about by rapidly changing information and/or technology.
- Valid State of Idaho Driver’s License and 21 years of age.
Skills
- Ability to learn basic evidence collection techniques, basic photography methods; understand and learn the rules of evidence, courtroom demeanor, testimony, and laws of search and seizure procedures.
- Ability to analyze maps, codes, and legal descriptions, and make appropriate judgments on compliance or non-compliance issues.
- Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with businesses, citizens, other employees, and the general public within the framework of the City Code, while making innovative use of dispute resolution techniques.
- Ability to maintain and update accurate files and records.
- Ability to work with a variety of individuals from different ethnic and socioeconomic backgrounds.
- Ability to work outdoors in a variety of weather conditions for extended periods of time.
- Ability to communicate effectively with others, both orally and in writing, using both technical and non-technical language.
