Code and Zoning Interpretation Intern

About The Team
The Code & Zoning Interpretation unit interprets the NYC Construction Codes, NYC Electrical Code, NYC Zoning Resolution, NYS Multiple Dwelling Law, and related laws and rules. The unit responds to interpretation requests, trains examiners on code and zoning, and manages appeals of determinations made by borough offices.
Responsibilities
- Assist with coordinating code development meetings and follow up on matters requiring further action.
- Assist with the creation of technical material for code committee review.
- Track code committee progress.
- Assist with coordinating training sessions for industry stakeholders, DOB, and other city-wide staff regarding code.
- Assist with creation and maintenance of databases, spreadsheets, and tracking systems, including tables, charts, graphs, and presentations related to code development.
- Draft meeting summaries and status reports for tracking purposes; prepare documents for local law formatting.
- Perform research regarding national standards and codes of other jurisdictions.
- Schedule and attend meetings, including inter-agency, division, and industry meetings.
Requirements
- Matriculation at an accredited college or graduate school. Employment is conditioned upon continuance as a student.
Preferred Skills
- Majoring in Architecture, Engineering, City Planning, Urban Studies, or a related field.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
- Proficiency in Microsoft Excel, Word, Outlook, and PowerPoint.
Schedule
- 17 hours/week when school is in session.
- 35 hours/week when school is on break.
Pay
- Entering Freshmen through completion of Sophomore year: $17.50/hour.
- Entering Junior through completion of Senior year: $17.75/hour.
- Graduate level: $18.00/hour.
Remote Work
When working a 35-hour/week schedule, this position may be eligible for remote work up to 2 days per week, pursuant to the Remote Work Pilot Program.
New York City residency is generally required within 90 days of appointment. However, City Employees in certain titles who have worked for the City for 2 continuous years may also be eligible to reside in Nassau, Suffolk, Putnam, Westchester, Rockland, or Orange County.
