Co-Operative Assistant-Electric Engineers
Consumers Energy is Michigan’s largest energy provider, delivering natural gas and/or electricity to 6.8 million residents across all 68 Lower Peninsula counties. About the role
As a Summer Intern, you will work alongside industry professionals on real-world projects that drive impact across our operations. Whether analyzing energy consumption data, supporting infrastructure upgrades, or contributing to clean energy initiatives, your work will help shape a more sustainable and efficient energy future. Interns collaborate as part of a larger team to provide hands-on support and design/development for various aspects of our business, including:
- Energy delivery (electric engineering, gas engineering, energy operations)
- Cyber security (deploying new technologies, detecting and responding to incidents)
- Information technology
- Physical security (field investigations, incident response, small projects)
- Compliance (managing regulatory requirements such as NERC/CIP, PCI, and TSA)
- Program management (project management, process mapping, security awareness, risk, and privacy)
- Supply chain (project management, emergency management, finance, human resources, strategy, governance, compliance, supplier diversity, inventory/sourcing analytics, supplier performance, issue resolution, warehousing)
In addition to project work, interns may participate in optional events such as networking opportunities, company tours, and the Intern Challenge philanthropic event.
Responsibilities
- Discuss problems, prioritize work, and provide technical expertise
- Support administrative activities (data entry, filing, document organizing)
- Design and improve processes to ensure efficiency and reliability, including regular maintenance, problem analysis, and troubleshooting
- Provide hands-on support for engineering projects, applying standard techniques and theories to solve basic problems
- Perform and design experiments, write summary test reports, analyze and collect data, and record findings
- Test and evaluate production processes to identify areas for improvement
- Other duties as assigned
Requirements
- Currently pursuing a Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Engineering from an ABET-accredited school, or pursuing an Engineering-related Master’s after completing a Bachelor’s in Engineering from an ABET-accredited school
- Minimum GPA of 2.7 or higher
Qualifications
- Flexibility and adaptability to new assignments and projects
- Strong problem-solving and troubleshooting skills
- Willingness and ability to learn new skills and concepts
- Ability to work independently or as part of a team
- Prior work or internship experience (preferred)
- Hands-on experience with MS Office Suite (Outlook, Word, Excel, Access, PowerPoint)
Schedule
Hybrid work schedule: Report to a Consumers Energy Service Center every Monday, Tuesday, and Thursday, with home office flexibility on Wednesday and Friday.
