Job Responsibilities
- Design, prototype, and fabricate custom components, fixtures, and assemblies to support R&D, process development, and laboratory experimentation.
- Work directly with scientists, engineers, and research staff to translate experimental concepts into manufacturable designs.
- Create and maintain 3D CAD models and detailed engineering drawings with appropriate tolerances and material specifications.
- Program, set up, and operate CNC and manual machining equipment to produce precision parts in metals and plastics.
- Perform fitting, assembly, and testing of mechanical systems, ensuring functionality and reliability.
- Iterate quickly on designs based on testing feedback or experimental outcomes.
- Maintain, calibrate, and troubleshoot shop equipment, ensuring safe and reliable operation.
- Manage material inventory, tooling, and consumables for the R&D machine shop.
- Ensure documentation and traceability of prototypes, part revisions, and design changes.
- Uphold safety and cleanliness standards appropriate for work supporting biotech research environments.
- Collaborate with cross-functional teams to improve manufacturability and support the transition of successful designs toward scaled production.
- Continuously evaluate and adopt new fabrication methods (e.g., 3D printing, laser cutting, modular fixturing) to expand internal prototyping capabilities.
- Provide technical consultation on mechanical design, material selection, and fabrication feasibility during project planning phases.
Requirements
- 5+ Years Programming and setting up 5-axis CNC mills and manual mills.
- Haas experience is a plus.
- Developing machining strategy from scratch.
- Ordering all necessary materials and tooling.
- Designing and building fixtures, jigs, and other work holding.
- Multitasking and balancing a busy workload.
- Completing tightly toleranced work.
Qualifications
- Proficiency in Mastercam and Solidworks.
- Familiarity and skill with interpreting technical drawings and blueprints and willingness to work closely with Engineering team.
- Understanding of mechanical assembly, fasteners, etc.
- Excellent troubleshooting skills.
- Ability to work independently and closely follow directions is essential.
- Capable of standing for extended periods of time.
- Understanding of materials and design considerations for biocompatibility, sterilization, and chemical resistance.
- Ability to lift a maximum of 40 pounds for short periods of time.
