What You Will Do

  • Operate and program 3 and 4 axis CNC mills, both horizontal and vertical
  • Lead and mentor a team of machinists and operators
  • Serve as the primary link between Production Management and the CNC department
  • Schedule and prioritize jobs to ensure on time delivery
  • Collaborate with Engineering and Purchasing to optimize tooling and fixturing
  • Interpret prints, CAD files, and technical drawings
  • Maintain high precision, quality control, and continuous improvement

What We Are Looking For

  • High school diploma or GED
  • 3 or more years operating manual mills
  • 5 or more years CNC machining and programming experience
  • Strong blueprint reading skills

Preferred

  • Prior leadership or supervisory experience
  • Tool and die or high precision assembly experience
  • Experience with HURCO and or DOOSAN mills
  • Experience with conversational programming systems
  • In-depth understanding of G-code programming

    Position Summary

    The CNC Milling Department Lead is responsible for overseeing daily CNC milling operations while actively operating and programming 3- and 4-axis horizontal and vertical mills. This role serves as the primary liaison between the Production Manager and the CNC machining team, ensuring efficient scheduling, optimized programming, and on-time delivery of precision-machined components.

    Essential Duties and Responsibilities

    • Operate and program 3- and 4-axis CNC mills (horizontal and vertical)
    • Lead, train, and mentor CNC machinists and operators
    • Serve as the primary point of contact between the Production Manager and CNC machining personnel
    • Schedule and prioritize jobs to ensure efficient workflow and on-time delivery
    • Define work assignments and coordinate machining tasks for team members
    • Collaborate with Purchasing and Manufacturing Engineering to optimize tooling, fixturing, and programming from first article through production
    • Interpret blueprints, CAD files, technical drawings, and engineering instructions accurately
    • Apply in-depth machining principles to improve process efficiency and order management
    • Conduct quality checks and ensure precision standards are consistently met
    • Maintain clean, organized, and safe work areas in accordance with company safety and 5S standards
    • Perform routine machine maintenance, troubleshooting, and shop upkeep as needed
    • Identify opportunities to improve workflow, quality, safety, and production efficiency
    • Ensure compliance with all PPE, lockout/tagout, and company safety procedures

    Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities (KSAs)

    • Strong understanding of CNC machining processes and manufacturing flow
    • Proficient in interpreting blueprints, technical drawings, and CAD models
    • Working knowledge of G-code programming and conversational programming
    • Strong scheduling, coordination, and production planning skills
    • Ability to lead and motivate a team in a fast-paced manufacturing environment
    • Strong critical thinking and problem-solving skills
    • Quality control analysis and inspection capability
    • Strong decision-making skills with cost-benefit awareness
    • Effective cross-department communication and collaboration skills
    • Ability to adapt machining methodologies based on order requirements and timelines

    Physical Requirements / Work Environment

    • Ability to stand for a minimum of 8 hours per shift
    • Ability to lift and carry up to 40 lbs
    • Frequent reaching, bending, and handling of moderately heavy parts
    • Exposure to noise, metal shavings, machinery, and industrial production environment conditions
    • Required use of PPE, including safety glasses, gloves, and steel-toed boots

    Minimum Qualifications

    • High school diploma or GED required
    • 3+ years of experience operating manual mills
    • 5+ years of experience machining and programming on CNC mills
    • Demonstrated proficiency in blueprint reading and machine setup

    Preferred Qualifications

    • Previous lead or supervisory experience
    • Experience in high-precision assembly, tool and die making
    • Experience with HURCO and DOOSAN mills
    • Experience with conversational programming systems
    • In-depth understanding of G-code programming
