CNC Department Lead
About the role
The CNC Department Lead is responsible for running the CNC department. The role involves programming and scheduling workflows, interpreting blueprints, designing CNC programming, setting up machines for production, and ensuring customer satisfaction with parts through test runs and adjustments.
Responsibilities
- Schedules workflow for the CNC department to meet customer demands and ensure on-time delivery.
- Reviews customer drawings and/or blueprints to determine feasibility of parts production.
- Works cross-functionally with the Quality department and others to meet customer requirements.
- Actively pursues continuous improvement with processes; manages the development of procedures, documents, and SOPs.
- Creates technical documentation to establish and support proper procedures.
- Uses Autodesk Inventor to correctly draw up accurate modeling of customer parts.
- Uses Mastercam to model tool paths; writes and edits programs for customer jobs.
- Maintains all program files and updates files with engineering or customer changes.
- Creates fixtures for new jobs and determines appropriate tooling.
- Orders and maintains CNC and hand-tooling inventory.
- Advises supervisor of any new tooling needed and maintains care and maintenance of tooling and equipment.
- Communicates any problems or concerns to the shift supervisor, quality manager, and/or plant manager.
- Performs set-ups for new jobs and documents fixture and tooling for operators.
- Performs test runs and necessary adjustments when needed.
- Uses precision measuring instruments to ensure machine is in tolerance.
- Maintains speeds, feeds, tooling, and fixtures to increase productivity and efficiency.
- Trains new employees on how to properly set-up and operate CNC machines and programs.
- Assists with general housekeeping of the fabrication department including tooling and fixture areas.
- Follows all company safety protocols and procedures.
- Champions safety to the broader fabrication team.
- Performs other duties as assigned.
Qualifications
- Education: Associates degree in machining concepts or a CNC programming certificate and/or equivalent experience.
- Experience: 2 or more years of experience with CNC programming software.
- Other Required Knowledge, Skills, And Abilities: The ability to perform high quality work in a fast-paced, changing environment; must be able to read and understand FANUC coding; must be able to read and interpret blueprints; corrects uses precision measuring equipment such as calipers, micrometers, gauges and CMMs; ability to troubleshoot and resolve mechanical issues; troubleshoots logistics issues with tooling or supplies for the CNC Department; ability to work independently as a self-starter; closely follows directions and ensures good execution of customer jobs; knowledge and experience with Autodesk and Camplus software or similar software used for CNC machining; must be organized with attention to detail; performs quality work that meets customer specifications; ability to participate in interviews and train new hires; must have good verbal and written communication skills; ability to work with mathematical concepts such as probability and statistical inference, and fundamentals of plane and solid geometry and trigonometry; ability to add and subtract two-digit numbers and to multiply and divide with 10's and 100's; ability to perform these operations using units of weight measurement, volume, and distance; ability to deal with problems involving a few concrete variables in standardized situations; must be able to pass pre-employment physical and drug screen; must be eligible to work in the United States, visa sponsorships are not available; must have regular attendance.
