About the role
The CNC Machinist is responsible for the effective set-up, operation and troubleshooting of new and existing parts and production lots, as well as successfully detecting malfunctions in machine operations. This position is responsible for operating computer numerical control (CNC) machines to produce quality parts in accordance with detailed engineering drawings to very tight tolerances. Will work with CNC machining centers, CNC multi-spindle drilling machines and other manual drilling machines, single spindle mills, press brakes, and measuring equipment. May edit programs for CNC equipment and interpret geometric tolerances on drawings in order to manufacture parts to specifications.
Responsibilities
- Follows all established company policies, rules and regulations, ISO procedures and work instructions.
- Works from CAD drawings, sketches and verbal instructions to interpret, plan and lay out own work.
- Will set up, load parts and operate multiple types of machining equipment in a safe manner, in order to produce Quality parts on a timely basis to very close tolerances.
- Interpret existing CNC programs and edit if necessary, in order to set up and operate CNC machines.
- Reviews sequences of machining operations, speeds, feeds and continually offers input in regard to improving the methods of production.
- Participates in the design and machining of special tooling or fixtures required to manufacture piece parts.
- Input of CNC programs for new parts, utilizing knowledge of numerical control machine operation.
- Calculates and codes machine controlling criteria, such as axis movement, type and size of cutting and drilling tools, spindle location, machining start.
- Makes changes to tools as required.
- De-burring parts as required to meet quality requirements.
- Detects equipment malfunctions or out of tolerance machining and adjusts machine, within capabilities, controls media as required to ensure quality of production.
- Uses coordinate measuring machines (both Manual and an automated vision system) and hand measuring tools to perform quality inspections.
- Does a first piece inspection and paperwork of own work, along with monitoring quality parameters on machined parts in-process using inspection sheets.
- Performs dimensional inspection of products as required for conformance to quality requirements.
- Communicates with supervisor, engineers, quality and other personnel for priority of assignments and to resolve machining or quality issues.
Requirements
- High School graduate plus trade school training in machine shop practices and procedures, plus 3 years previous related experience using Vertical CNC machining centers and other general purpose machining and inspection equipment.
- Must be able to handle all phases of set-up, operation, editing of programs, and solid troubleshooting skills.
- Intermediate knowledge and application of precision measuring instruments and the application of such instruments. Instruments should include but not limited to calipers, ID and OD micrometers, depth gauges, height gauges, and indicators.
- Intermediate knowledge of reading drawings and specifications with an understanding of geometric tolerances and dimensions.
- Intermediate knowledge of tool holders, cutting tools, boring bars, fixtures, inserts and other accessories used on various machines.
