CNC Machine Repair Supervisor

About the Role

Amentum is seeking a CNC Machine Repair Supervisor to oversee a team of 5–14 employees supporting technical operations at the client’s facility in Durham, NC. The role involves maintaining, developing, executing, and continuously improving preventative and predictive maintenance activities for a variety of industrial equipment, including:

• Multi-Axis Wet and Dry Grinders
• Balancers
• Central Coolant Systems
• Pumps and Exhaust Systems
• HVAC Units
• Hydraulic and Electrical Systems
• Robotic Tool Changers

The Supervisor serves as the technical expert for installing, troubleshooting, servicing, and documenting electrical/electronic, mechanical, and controls needs of automated equipment in an industrial environment. This includes working with PLC and distributed I/O control systems (e.g., Allen Bradley, Siemens 7, GE, Emerson, Reliance, Omron, Ceda, Honeywell) and robotic control systems (e.g., Fanuc, ABB, Mazatrol, Kuka, Yaskawa, Kawasaki, Denso, Mitsubishi). The role also involves working with instrumentation such as thermocouples, RTDs, and pressure/flow/position/level transducers, as well as voltages ranging from control (12–24V) to medium voltage motor controls (480V, 3-phase).

Responsibilities

• Supervise and provide technical support, direction, safety training, audits, and quality control for facility, production, and contract employees in a fast-paced industrial environment.
• Install, troubleshoot, service, and document automated equipment, including CNC machines, PLC systems, and robotic controls.
• Monitor and manage documentation and scheduled maintenance via CMMS (Maximo).
• Oversee reactive/corrective maintenance, distributing tasks to available technicians.
• Audit work performance for safety and quality, providing coaching as needed.
• Maintain effective team performance and ensure 99.9% accuracy in time and downtime reporting.
• Compile and present reports to Amentum management and client teams.
• Participate in and document cost savings and root cause analysis.
• Lead repairs, overhauls, and construction projects with minimal supervision.
• Identify, troubleshoot, and correct operational or safety-related issues, performing root cause evaluations to prevent equipment failures.
• Prioritize work based on client needs, ensuring on-time completion and proper documentation.
• Schedule and provide training/cross-training for multi-functional employees.
• Implement and enforce all safety rules and guidelines.
• Plan, document, and report performance to Amentum management and the client.

Requirements

• Ten years of experience in a technical role related to industrial production or facilities maintenance, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
• Five years of supervisory experience in industrial production or facilities maintenance.
• High school diploma or equivalent.
• Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite, particularly Excel and Access.
• Experience in a leadership position analyzing and resolving facilities maintenance problems (e.g., electrical, mechanical, HVAC, cranes, hoists).
• Experience creating PowerPoint presentations and delivering them to large audiences.
• Experience developing and training a multi-skilled technical workforce.
• Experience creating metrics and data mining for performance improvement.
• Familiarity with Continuous Improvement disciplines (e.g., Six Sigma, Kaizen, Lean Manufacturing, 5S, 4 M’s).

Preferred Qualifications

• Bachelor’s degree, 5 years of supervisory experience, or equivalent trade school credentials.

Schedule

Typical work schedule is Monday–Friday, 6:30 AM–3:00 PM, with hours varying based on business demand. Weekend and call-in support may be required. Some tasks may require alternative shifts or air travel.

Physical Requirements

• Repetitive wrist movement and extensive walking throughout facilities during the workday.
• Ability to read and understand documents or computer screens.
• Proficiency in using office equipment and computer keyboards for database access, messaging, and document preparation.
• Ability to attend on-site and off-site meetings, including some air travel.
• Effective communication via telephone, one-on-one discussions, group meetings, and presentations.
• Fluency in computer use, including the full Microsoft product line.
• Ability to move light to medium-weight materials and interact professionally under stress.

Special Requirements

• Wear steel-toe safety shoes, safety glasses, gloves, hard hats, and other personal protective equipment (PPE) as needed.
• Ability to work from aerial lifts and scissors lifts at heights up to 30 feet or above.
• Must pass and maintain STS Certification within one year of employment.
• U.S. citizenship required for facility credentials/authorization.
• Valid Driver’s License may be required.

Pay

$45–$47 per hour.
