About the Role

This position involves administering medications to residents, ensuring accuracy and safety, and contributing to the improvement of medication processes within the facility.

Responsibilities

• Follow the facility's policies and procedures for administering medications to residents.
• Note and report errors in the administration of medications.
• Assist in developing and implementing procedures or programs to identify, analyze, and prevent medication errors.
• Complete administrative requirements, such as forms, charts, and reports, and submit them as required.
• Maintain a productive working relationship with nursing staff, physicians, the Medical Director, and pharmacists.
• Report resident complaints or grievances to the Director of Nursing Services.
• Participate in facility surveys conducted by authorized government agencies.
• Engage in Quality Assurance programs, the Pharmaceutical Services Committee, and other facility committees aimed at improving medication processes.
• Accurately and safely prepare, administer, and document oral and/or topical medications as ordered by the attending physician or Medical Director.
• Verify medications brought into the facility by newly admitted residents with the attending physician or facility pharmacy.
• Follow facility policies for destroying medications, including proper documentation under the direction of the facility pharmacist or Director of Nursing Services.
• Ensure all medications are properly labeled according to facility policies.
• Follow facility procedures for charting medications and documenting discontinued medications.
• Report and document drug receipt errors, including submitting a written error report signed by an observer/witness.
• Hold medications for residents who are transferred or when medications are discontinued by the physician.
• Observe and verify that medication is ingested or applied as directed, and document instances of refusal.
• Promptly notify the Charge Nurse, Nurse Supervisor, or Director of Nursing Services of any errors or adverse reactions to medications.
• Verify resident identity before administering medication.
• Accurately measure, record, and report residents' vital signs.
• Follow facility procedures for residents who self-administer medications.
• Be familiar with common medical abbreviations, symbols, and terms related to medication administration.
• Attend continuing education programs to maintain professional certification and stay updated on changes in the field.
• Protect resident's protected health information and report any unauthorized disclosures.
• Report any unauthorized attempts to access the facility's information system.
• Perform assigned tasks in accordance with established policies and procedures.
• Follow work assignments and schedules to complete tasks efficiently.
• Cooperate with interdepartmental personnel to ensure adequate nursing services for residents.
• Maintain the confidentiality of all resident care information and report any unauthorized disclosures.

Qualifications

• Minimum of a high school education or its equivalent.
• Ability to read, analyze, and interpret professional journals, technical procedures, or governmental regulations.
• Ability to write reports, business correspondence, and procedure manuals.
• Ability to effectively present information and respond to questions from managers and employees.
• Ability to apply mathematical concepts such as fractions, percentages, ratios, and proportions to practical situations.
• Ability to solve practical problems and interpret instructions in written, oral, diagram, or schedule form.

Certificates, Licenses, Registrations

• Must be a licensed Medication Aide, having successfully completed a state-approved training program and any necessary examination(s) in accordance with state laws.

Physical Demands

• Occasionally lift and/or move up to 25 pounds.
• Prolonged use of a desktop or laptop computer.
• Regularly required to sit, stand, walk, talk, read, or hear.
• Frequent use of office equipment such as copier, scanner, fax, telephone, and calculator.
• May be required to assist in the evacuation of residents during emergency situations.

Work Environment

• The noise level in the work environment is usually low to moderate.
