About the role
The CLU Senior Credit Underwriting Manager directs, manages, and mentors a team of commercial loan underwriters. The role involves underwriting and reviewing new and renewal commercial loan requests, producing credit memorandums for lending and credit management, and completing commercial loan underwriting responsibilities alongside the team.
Responsibilities
- Manage and mentor employees in underwriting commercial loans for unsecured loans of $250M or more and secured exposures greater than $250M.
- Oversee assignments and ensure timely completion of workflow, including pre-flights, new and renewal loan requests, annual reviews, and other credit activities.
- Train and guide employees in applying the bank’s loan policies and department procedures.
- Support underwriting staff by answering questions and serving as a subject matter expert.
- Manage the performance appraisal process to measure employee progress and development.
- Provide feedback and assistance to upper management on commercial credit underwriting topics.
- Interview and hire commercial underwriting staff.
- Approve employee timecards, overtime, and vacation requests.
- Underwrite the bank’s larger, more complex CLU credits, including high relationship exposures.
- Develop credit information for lending decisions by:
- Using a checklist to ensure all necessary financial information is received; request missing information.
- Reviewing and analyzing credit, collateral, and financial information.
- Preparing financial spreads, global cash flows, and real estate models.
- Drafting written Credit Memos covering Transaction Summary, Borrower History, Relationship History, Financial Analysis, Repayment Ability, Collateral, and Industry.
- Completing written Relationship Credit Reviews.
- Monitoring financial indicator covenants.
- Provide feedback and recommendations to Relationship Managers, Credit Officers, and others regarding creditworthiness, loan structure, risk rating, and other financial factors.
- Manage pipeline workflow and communicate with management as needed.
- Ensure high-quality production and turnaround standards.
- Assume ownership of assigned credits with minimal supervision.
- Complete nCino responsibilities, including Pre-Flights, Determining Total Exposure, Final Review Steps, Covenants, Exceptions, and loading credit information into Doc Mans.
- Attend client calls with Relationship Managers/Managing Directors to gain insights on clients and credit requests.
- Seek and refer new business opportunities to appropriate bank staff.
- Make cross-sell recommendations to Relationship Managers/Managing Directors.
- Apply Renasant Bank’s Loan Policies and Department Procedures consistently.
- Perform other related duties as assigned.
Requirements
- High school diploma or equivalent required; Bachelor’s Degree in Finance, Accounting, Business, or Economics preferred (or equivalent years of directly related experience).
- Minimum of 5 years of prior Commercial Loan Underwriting Experience or 10 years of Commercial Lending experience.
- Experience underwriting commercial construction, C&I, and CRE loans.
- Experience underwriting one or more specialty loan types.
- Strong competency in underwriting complex borrowers, guarantors, and credits.
- Ability to identify commercial loan types and purposes and recommend loan terms and structures.
- Proficiency in analyzing tax returns, accountant-prepared financial statements, and internally prepared financial statements.
- Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
- Strong verbal and written communication skills.
- Ability to learn and use new systems, processes, policies, and procedures effectively.
- Strong time management and prioritization skills to handle multiple deadlines.
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office (Outlook, Word, Excel).
- Ability to use a financial calculator for loan payments and other financial calculations.
- Positive, proactive, and flexible attitude with a commitment to service excellence.
