About the role
VyStar Credit Union is seeking a Senior Commercial Credit Underwriter to join our team. This role is responsible for effectively underwriting, analyzing, and assessing risks for various business credits.
Responsibilities
- Responsible for the review, independent, and objective underwriting of business credits from minimum VyStar limits more than $10,000,000.
- Possess an advanced understanding of all documentation submitted by borrower and/or prepared by VyStar to determine risks involved and clearly communicate analysis to proper loan approval authority.
- Affirm credit quality is maintained throughout the business loan portfolio; this includes the maintenance of ticklers, reports, and forms.
- Continued education regarding the current and future economic conditions of industries borrowing money from VyStar Credit Union.
- Assemble pertinent information and reports for the Business Credit and Servicing Manager as required.
- Identify and make recommendations for process improvements, increased efficiencies, and quality service to ensure timely loan decisions.
- The Senior Commercial Credit Underwriter may be required to review appraisals, environmental reports, loan committee agendas and minutes, and any other work completed by other Commercial Credit Underwriters for accuracy and completeness.
- Maintain an ongoing knowledge of current regulatory, policy and procedure changes.
- Perform to all established metrics, goals and standards as outlined by department management and in VyStar Policy and Procedure.
- Work together with peers and management to provide quality service during both internal and external engagements.
- Perform annual loan reviews of existing portfolio to determine continued repayment capacity and potential risks.
- Responsible for thorough review and analysis of all appraisal reports and environmental assessment reports with all findings being documented and reported to the loan approving authority.
- Conduct annual field audits (collateral inspections) of existing portfolio to analyze collateral risk as required.
- Adhere to VyStar Credit Union and departmental policies and procedures.
- Maintains ongoing knowledge of current economic conditions that may affect the business services loan portfolio and create potential risks.
- Evaluate and analyze business loan and commercial requests and make informed, accurate and complete credit recommendations to management.
- Serve as the Acting Business Credit Manager in their absence as necessary. Other essential duties as assigned by Business Credit Manager and VP-Business Credit and Servicing.
- Communicate with members, prospective members, and vendors as applicable.
- Provides leadership, training, and support to the team as well as other internal partners by mentoring and coaching as appropriate.
Requirements
- BA/BS degree with emphasis in Accounting, Business or Finance
- Minimum of eight (8) years of experience in a business/commercial credit underwriting and analysis environment within a financial institution.
- Advanced knowledge of business tax returns and business financial statements.
- Advanced understanding of financial analysis including cash flow, profitability, liquidity, leverage, and solvency.
- Advanced knowledge of standard underwriting theory. Demonstrated ability to successfully structure complex credit requests that minimize risk while providing member value.
- Basic understanding of generally accepted accounting practices.
- Knowledge of State and NCUA regulations.
- Highly developed written and verbal communication skills. Professional interpersonal skills, including the ability to build rapport and professionally interact at all levels with the organization.
- Must be highly motivated.
- Ability to work independently, as well as in a team environment, in a high-pressure environment with ever-changing priorities on a professional level.
