Cloud Automation Engineer - ITS4

About the role

This position serves our partners at the Department of Employment and Economic Development (DEED). The MNIT DEED team provides technical support to help improve employment conditions in Minnesota. The team supports work that improves workforce and community development, increases business recruitment, and helps Minnesota small businesses to expand into international trade.

Responsibilities

• Administer, maintain, automate, and continuously improve DEED's cloud-based and on-premises application hosting environments.
• Support mission-critical systems in AWS, Azure, Windows, Linux, and Unix environments.
• Implement new cloud technologies.
• Leverage automation and cloud best practices to ensure secure, reliable, and efficient delivery of infrastructure and application services.

Requirements

• A minimum of four (4) years of IT related experience in administering and supporting cloud and server infrastructure environments.
• Experience implementing and supporting DevOps processes and Infrastructure as Code (IaC), and CI/CD practices using tools such as GitHub Actions, Terraform, Ansible, CloudFormation, Azure Bicep, or similar technologies.
• Deep hands-on experience with Microsoft Azure and Amazon Web Services, including networking, compute, storage, identity, and security services.
• Experience using scripting or automation technologies (e.g., Ansible, Python, PowerShell, Bash and YAML) to automate system administration, deployments, or operational tasks.
• Experience troubleshooting and resolving complex infrastructure, operating system, application, or cloud service issues.
• Experience administering Linux and/or Windows server operating systems in enterprise environments.
• Demonstrated ability to communicate clearly and effectively in a manner that facilitates mutual understanding. Customer-focused approach grounded in active listening, empathy, and solution-oriented problem-solving to deliver positive user experiences.

• Education in Information Technology (IT) or an IT related field may substitute for experience as follows: a master’s degree for eighteen (18) months of experience; a bachelor’s degree for one (1) year; and an associate’s degree for six (6) months.

Skills

• Knowledge of cloud networking concepts including VPCs, VNets, firewalls, load balancers, DNS, VPN/ExpressRoute, and hybrid connectivity.
• Strong experience with cloud security best practices, identity and access management, RBAC, secrets management, and compliance frameworks.
• Experience building standardized cloud patterns, blueprints, and reusable IaC modules.
• Ability to design scalable, resilient, highly available cloud architectures with a strong understanding of Well-Architected Frameworks (AWS and Azure).
• Strong understanding of containerization and orchestration (Docker, Kubernetes, AKS, EKS).
• Experience with monitoring, logging, and observability tools (Azure Monitor, CloudWatch, Prometheus, Grafana, ELK, etc.).
• Collaborative working style across operations, security, networking, and development teams.
