Position Summary
The Clinical Veterinarian (Sr. or Associate) supports the Animal Care and Use program at Temple University, focusing on research initiatives involving animal use. They provide professional veterinary care, enforce humane care standards, and assist with research procedural support.
- Provide hands-on clinical care for all animals under the care of ULAR (mice, rats, dogs, cats, sheep, pigs, aquatics, reptiles, etc.)
- Participate in research procedural support, including research-related surgical procedures
- Perform veterinary exams, diagnostic tests, and maintain animal health
- Supervise technical staff, oversee regulatory compliance, consult with and train animal users, and teach graduate and professional students
- Perform quality assurance for campus animal facilities
- Serve as a member of the Institutional Animal Care and Use Committee (IACUC)
- Review animal use protocols
- Assist investigators in developing research protocols
Major Responsibilities
The Clinical Veterinarian is responsible for providing care to all research animals in assigned facilities, including:
- Observing animals
- Diagnosing and treating clinical conditions
- Prescribing and monitoring necessary medications
- Maintaining animal health records
Required Education And Experience
- VMD/DVM from an accredited US School of Veterinary Medicine
- Veterinary Licensure in PA (or ability to attain license within 3 mo. of hire)
- Grade T28 Clinical Veterinarian (Associate): 0-4 years' experience in lab animal medicine in the academic/non-profit/government/industry setting
- Grade T29 Clinical Veterinarian (Sr.): 5 years' experience in lab animal medicine in the academic/non-profit/government/industry setting
- Ability to obtain a practitioner's DEA license within 6-9 months of employment
- Demonstrated experience in providing large animal anesthesia/surgical support services
Required Skills And Abilities
- Establish and maintain effective working relationships with department personnel, investigators, research staff, and institutional administrators
- Communicate effectively verbally and in writing
- Use and troubleshoot veterinary equipment
- Utilize software including Zoom, MS Teams, MS word, excel, and PowerPoint
- Willingness to pursue continuous improvement in duties
Preferred
- Completion of residency in laboratory animal medicine
- Three or more years of post-doctoral training experience
- American College of Laboratory Animal Medicine (ACLAM) board certification or eligibility
- Experience with rodent surgical models, rodent technical procedures, USDA species technical procedures and models (i.e. sheep, pig, dog, cat), rodent breeding colonies, genetically altered animals, aquatics procedures, and rodent medicine experience
