About the role

The Ophthalmic Technician participates in the care of patients in a clinic setting. Duties include greeting patients, escorting them to exam rooms, performing diagnostic tests, documenting patient information, and assisting with minor surgical procedures.

Responsibilities

  • Greet patients and explain their appointment process
  • Escort patients to exam rooms
  • Perform diagnostic ophthalmic tests and procedures
  • Accurately document patient information in the electronic medical records system
  • Initiate and perform documentation of the patient's chief complaint, present illness, and capture past medical history
  • Apply drops to anesthetize, dilate, or medicate eyes
  • Assist with minor surgery procedures, intraocular injections, and laser treatments
  • Educate patients regarding the administration of medications and pre/post-operative instructions
  • Secure patient information and maintain confidentiality
  • Utilize effective problem-solving skills to de-escalate patient dissatisfaction
  • Stay current with eye anatomy, disease, symptoms, and ocular medications
  • Absorb and apply new technologies and medications
  • Complete diagnostic and procedure coding

Requirements

  • High school diploma or GED equivalent
  • Valid driver's license and ability to drive a motor vehicle
  • Standing or sitting for extended periods and lifting up to 50 lbs

Qualifications

  • More than 2 years of experience in OT I and OT II duties
  • Typically has 3-5+ years of experience
  • Eligible for COA, COT, or COMT certifications

Skills

  • Basic knowledge of eye anatomy, disease, symptoms, and ocular medications
  • Effective problem-solving skills
  • Medical terminology knowledge
  • Electronic Medical Records (EMR) experience
