About the role
The Ophthalmic Technician participates in the care of patients in a clinic setting. Duties include greeting patients, escorting them to exam rooms, performing diagnostic tests, documenting patient information, and assisting with minor surgical procedures.
Responsibilities
- Greet patients and explain their appointment process
- Escort patients to exam rooms
- Perform diagnostic ophthalmic tests and procedures
- Accurately document patient information in the electronic medical records system
- Initiate and perform documentation of the patient's chief complaint, present illness, and capture past medical history
- Apply drops to anesthetize, dilate, or medicate eyes
- Assist with minor surgery procedures, intraocular injections, and laser treatments
- Educate patients regarding the administration of medications and pre/post-operative instructions
- Secure patient information and maintain confidentiality
- Utilize effective problem-solving skills to de-escalate patient dissatisfaction
- Stay current with eye anatomy, disease, symptoms, and ocular medications
- Absorb and apply new technologies and medications
- Complete diagnostic and procedure coding
Requirements
- High school diploma or GED equivalent
- Valid driver's license and ability to drive a motor vehicle
- Standing or sitting for extended periods and lifting up to 50 lbs
Qualifications
- More than 2 years of experience in OT I and OT II duties
- Typically has 3-5+ years of experience
- Eligible for COA, COT, or COMT certifications
Skills
- Basic knowledge of eye anatomy, disease, symptoms, and ocular medications
- Effective problem-solving skills
- Medical terminology knowledge
- Electronic Medical Records (EMR) experience
