Clinical Research Technician
Retina Consultants of Texas (RCTX) is one of the largest and most respected retina-only ophthalmology practices in the United States, committed to preserving patients' vision. All physicians are board-certified and specialize exclusively in diseases and surgery of the retina, vitreous, and macula, with an additional ocular oncology division.
About the role
The Clinical Research Technician is a dual-role position responsible for providing clinical support and research coordination services within a high-volume practice. This role requires working exclusively within the EMR system (Nextech) to document ocular examinations, maintain patient flow, and facilitate communication regarding appointment status. The candidate must be able to travel to multiple clinics to support variable hours (Monday - Friday, 6:30 am to 6:30 pm), with schedules provided weekly based on physician, patient, and surgery needs. Weekend hours may also be available.
Responsibilities
This position combines ophthalmic technical skills with research administration capabilities, requiring strong communication to educate patients about clinical trials and assist with informed consent processes.
- Clinical Functions:
- Obtain comprehensive patient history, including chief complaint, history of present illness, family and patient medical history, allergies, and current medications.
- Perform and document visual acuity, confrontational visual fields, motility evaluation, pupillary function tests, dilation, and ocular tonometry.
- Assist physicians with laser procedures, injections, and minor procedures while maintaining sterile and safe environment protocols.
- Perform intraocular pressure checks after injections.
- Provide compassionate patient care throughout clinic flow.
- Maintain cleanliness in exam and procedure rooms and ensure adequate supply stock.
- Counsel, consent, set up, and assist with in-office procedures.
- Research Functions:
- Counsel and educate patients regarding clinical trials, clearly articulating complex study information.
- Conduct informed consent processes for research studies.
- Administer mandatory questionnaires to study subjects.
- Prepare visit-specific documentation and charts for the Physician Clinic Team.
- Request medical records for Serious Adverse Event Reporting and ship laboratory biological samples for analysis.
- Coordinate and schedule subject visits within study-specific windows per protocol guidelines.
- Transcribe subject study information from source documents to Electronic Case Report Forms.
- Obtain any applicable additional/required sponsor training and/or certifications.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
Requirements
- Education:
- High school diploma required.
- Bachelor of Science/Biology preferred.
- Experience:
- Previous healthcare or research experience preferred but not required.
- Ability to understand and articulate complex concepts.
- Quick learning ability and adaptability.
- Bilingual capabilities preferred (English primary).
