About the Department

The Institute for Population and Precision Health (IPPH), located in the Biological Sciences Division, integrates a wide spectrum of factors such as human health behaviors, environmental factors, social and economic factors, policies, and genetic determinants of health into studies focused on the treatment and prevention of disease, as well as the maintenance of wellness. Leveraging the University of Chicago’s institutional strength in population science, the Institute conducts research spanning diverse fields such as genetic medicine, cancer epidemiology, microbiome, and epigenomics with the common goal of improving human health outcomes. The Institute also develops multidisciplinary training programs to equip researchers with emerging tools and methods for precision health research within a population health framework.

Faculty lead research projects in biostatistics, epidemiology, and health services research and participate in interdisciplinary teams to address complex problems in health and healthcare locally and globally.

About the Role

This position provides technical research support activities related to collecting, documenting, and reporting on basic clinical studies. It supports administrative and operational tasks for clinical research conducted across the University. This at-will position is wholly or partially funded by contractual grant funding, with employment contingent upon continued receipt of grant funds and satisfactory job performance.

Responsibilities

• Collects and maintains biometric data and biospecimens.
• Introduces patients at UCMC and in the Community Mobile Clinic Van to research studies, answers questions about participation and consent, and may assist in administering tests and/or questionnaires following protocols.
• Performs blood draws and processes blood and urine samples.
• Packages and ships biological samples to outside labs.
• Completes all activities by strictly following Good Clinical Practices (GCP) and all relevant local, state, and federal laws, regulations, and guidance, including those from the UChicago Institutional Review Board (IRB), FDA Code of Federal Regulations (CFR), and the International Conference on Harmonization (ICH).
• Maintains detailed records of results, including collecting, extracting, and entering data, and preparing basic charts and graphs.
• Prepares charts for participant visits, sets up and cleans exam rooms before and after visits, enters data as needed, and performs data and equipment quality control checks.
• Assists with and performs various administrative and operational tasks under direct supervision.
• Acquires and applies knowledge of clinical studies to collect analyzable clinical research data and/or samples.
• Performs other related work as needed.

Requirements

• Minimum requirements include vocational training, apprenticeships, or equivalent experience in a related field (not typically required to have a four-year degree).
• Knowledge and skills developed through less than 2 years of work experience in a related discipline.

Qualifications

• Preferred Education: Bachelor's degree in Epidemiology, Public Health, Nursing, Biology, or a closely related field.
• Preferred Experience:
  • 1 year of relevant research experience, including experience with outreach efforts, study recruitment, and collecting biometric data.
  • Phlebotomy experience.
  • Wet lab sample processing experience.
• Preferred Competencies:
  • Knowledge in a relevant scientific field.
  • Knowledge of research techniques or methods.
  • Knowledge of regulatory policies and procedures.
  • Analytical and problem-solving skills.
  • Attention to detail and organizational skills.
  • Verbal and written communication skills.
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office.

Pay

Hourly pay range: $19.23 - $24.04.
