Clinical Pharmacy Specialist-Infectious Disease

Maintenance and dissemination of drug information

Maintains and disseminates drug information pertaining to infectious disease, including in-service education of hospital personnel, consultation with patients, hospital staff, medical staff, and conferences.

Duties and Responsibilities

• Imparts therapeutic guidance and drug information to hospital staff (pharmacy personnel, medical staff, and nursing staff).
• Competent in treating various patient age groups (adult, pediatric, geriatric, adolescent, and psychiatric).
• Monitors drug therapy for appropriateness and safety, ensuring high-quality patient care.
• Performs pharmacokinetics, IV to PO conversions, therapeutic interchanges, and other clinical pharmacy functions accurately and promptly.
• Develops and maintains reports and information for pharmacy management, hospital utilization, and antimicrobial stewardship team.
• Analyzes annual evaluations and reports, covering trends in antimicrobial use, hospital length of stay, antibiograms, resistance trends, and core measure data related to antibiotic stewardship management.
• Serves as a consultant to the Pharmacy & Therapeutics committee and other hospital-sponsored clinical and performance improvement committees.
• Participates in clinical rounding, public speaking, and presenting technical and financial data using PowerPoint or similar formats.
• Develops, implements, evaluates, and continuously evolves clinical pathways in infectious disease management programs.
• Collaborates with pharmacy, infection control, information systems, and infectious disease medical staff in managing antimicrobial management programs.
• Evaluates and maintains quality initiatives according to accreditation organizations for antimicrobial stewardship and antimicrobial programs.
• Reports daily to the Clinical Pharmacy Manager on operational status, assigned projects, and role expectations.
• Rotates shifts between morning and afternoon.

Job Specifications

• Required Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
• Knowledge: Pharm.D. or equivalent from an ACPE-accredited School of Pharmacy and a current pharmacist license in good standing with appropriate State Board of Pharmacy. Residency in an ASHP accredited program and/or Infectious Disease Fellowship Recommended. Advanced Infectious Disease certification in Antimicrobial Stewardship Recommended.
• Skills: Thorough knowledge of state and federal laws and regulations governing pharmacy services. Proficient in the use and application of new medications and technology. Effective verbal and written communication skills are required. Ability to effectively participate on an interdisciplinary team or committee. Knowledge of pathophysiology, interpretation of diagnostic criteria, pharmacokinetics, and pharmacotherapeutics. Problems solving ability and analytical thinking preferred.
• Abilities: Ability to work independently and handle stress appropriately. Ability to work cooperatively with other members of Mercy Hospital and Medical Center and pharmacy staff. Ability to handle multiple tasks and adapt to changes in workload and work schedule. Ability to set priorities, make critical decisions, and respond to client concerns. Fosters a team environment. Ability to communicate effectively (verbal and written).
