Clinical Pharmacy Specialist-Critical Care

Duties and Responsibilities

• Participates in daily patient care rounds.
• Makes sure drug therapy is right for each patient, checking doses, forms, and plans.
• Talks to doctors about medicine orders and writes down what changes are made.
• Helps doctors and nurses with medicines in special care units like CCU and ICU.
• Maintains patient files with important information like allergies and medicines.
• Promotes using a special list of medicines called the formulary.
• Knows how to help patients of different ages with their medicines.
• Makes sure all medicines are used safely and correctly.
• Looks for problems with medicines and tells others if they find something wrong.
• Does tests to make sure medicines are working well.
• Answers questions from other health workers and patients about medicines.
• Writes down what they do to help patients and saves money on medicines.
• Sets up meetings with other doctors to talk about medicines and patient care.
• Writes articles and gives talks to teach others about medicines.
• Plans ways to help patients get the best medicines for their health.
• Reports every day to the Clinical Pharmacy Manager about what they're doing.
• Helps out during emergencies and helps patients understand their medicines before leaving the hospital.
• Works with the outpatient pharmacy to make sure patients get the right medicines.

Job Specifications

• Has a Pharm.D. or equivalent from an ACPE-accredited school of pharmacy and is licensed to practice in good standing.
• Has completed a PGY1 or PGY2 residency in critical care, or at least 3 years of relevant clinical experience.
• Preferred to have board certification.
• Proficient in using computers and pharmacy information systems.
• Thorough knowledge of laws and regulations about pharmacy services.
• Good at talking to people and understanding complex ideas.
• Knowledgeable about how the body works and how medicines affect it.
• Can solve problems and think carefully about things.
• Can work alone and deal with stress.
• Can work well with others and follow rules.
