Clinical Pastoral Education Resident

About the role

The Clinical Pastoral Education (CPE) Resident is responsible for addressing the spiritual, religious and emotional needs of patients, families, physicians, and staff. The CPE fosters collaborative relationships with interdisciplinary care teams and contributes to the well-being of the community.

Responsibilities

• Addresses the spiritual, religious and emotional needs of patients, families, physicians, and staff.
• Fosters collaborative relationships with interdisciplinary care teams.
• Collaborates with patient/family in planning care and evaluating programs and outcomes.
• Responds to ethical issues in patient care.
• Provides nursing care in a non-judgmental manner that respects patient diversity and acknowledges patients' rights.
• Provides spiritual care and emotional support to patients, families, physicians, and staff.
• Conducts regular rounds on assigned clinical areas as determined by department guidelines to connect with staff and assess patient, family, physician, and staff needs.
• Makes appropriate responses to referrals in a timely manner as determined by department guidelines.
• Conducts religious or spiritual rites and services as needed or requested.
• Documents interventions and maintains records and reports concerning pastoral care activities according to department guidelines.
• Participates in the Residency program of Clinical Pastoral Education in accordance with the Standards of the Association for Clinical Pastoral Education (ACPE) and the requirements of the Sentara School of Clinical Pastoral Education.
• Fulfills the objectives and outcomes of CPE Levels I and II as specified by the Standards of the ACPE.

Requirements

• Completion of one prior unit of Clinical Pastoral Education from an accredited program.
• ACPE Clinical Pastoral Education Supervisory/Education - Certification - Other/National (Preferred).

Qualifications

• Education: Bachelor's Level Degree (Required)
• Master’s degree (Preferred)

• Effective use of the chaplaincy process to deliver individualized care to patients.
• Systematic collection and review of patient-specific data and communication.
• Age-specific care integration.
• Interpretation of sickness, suffering, death, etc., in the context of patient's theological framework.
• Response to ethical issues in patient care.
• Nursing care in a non-judgmental manner that respects patient diversity and acknowledges patients' rights.
• Supportive and empathetic communication with patients, families, physicians, and staff.
• Documentation and reporting of interventions and care activities.
