About the Role

The Clinical Nurse Supervisor (Associate Clinical Manager) manages a unit/department by implementing and maintaining specific policies, procedures, and guidelines. This role leads team members in providing direct patient care, ensures compliance with quality and safety initiatives, and partners with a multidisciplinary team to meet the clinical needs of patients and families. The Associate Clinical Manager also provides leadership and management to unit/department team members and serves as a charge nurse.

The Operating Room at Anschutz campus is a 14 OR unit treating children and adolescents for any level of injury or illness. The unit supports 24 different surgical specialties and performs over 23,000 cases annually. The team includes bachelor’s-prepared nurses, certified surgical technicians, anesthesia technicians, anesthesia providers, and surgeons. Surgical procedures include abdominal, thoracic, bariatric, cleft, craniofacial, plastic reconstructive, colorectal, cardiac, ENT, fetal, burn, trauma, neurosurgery, orthopedic, ophthalmology, gynecologic, transplant, and urology surgeries. OR nurses and surgical technologists receive extensive training and education across all specialties to promote communication, teamwork, and critical thinking.

Responsibilities

  • Manages the implementation and maintenance of unit/department-specific policies, procedures, and guidelines while ensuring consistency with evidence-based practice and organizational standards.
  • Leads unit/department team members in providing direct patient care by demonstrating expert clinical knowledge and promoting the Professional Practice Model and Professional Standards.
  • Serves as a charge nurse by preparing schedules, assigning team members to patients, overseeing admission/discharge/patient flow, and monitoring and ordering medicines and supplies.
  • Works with team members to create individualized plans of care to meet patient needs.
  • Interprets and explains regulatory standards and hospital policies, procedures, and rules to employees, ensuring compliance with quality and safety initiatives.
  • Ensures staffing resources are utilized appropriately and shifts resources to meet patient and unit needs.
  • Partners with a multidisciplinary team to meet the clinical needs of patients and families.
  • Rounds with patients, families, and team members to promote patient experience and quality care.
  • Resolves operational and patient/family issues, making decisions inclusive of multiple perspectives and addressing underlying problems.
  • Assists team members in achieving unit outcomes, performance, and professional development standards; identifies opportunities for continual improvement.
  • Champions clinical practice and professional growth by working with the CNE/CNS to meet educational needs and evaluate staff competencies.
  • Develops, coaches, and evaluates team members; mentors them in creating/evaluating projects focused on improving clinical practice.
  • Provides advice to the Clinical Manager on hiring, terminations, promotions, and disciplinary actions as required.
  • Monitors expenditures for the unit/department and participates in budget recommendations.
  • Position requires regular and predictable attendance.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in Nursing (Master’s degree in Nursing or a directly related health care field preferred).
  • Three years of clinical experience; previous OR Nurse experience (scrubbing and/or circulating) strongly preferred.
  • Registered Nurse (RN) licensure.
  • BLS/CPR certification from the American Heart Association with at least 6 months left before expiration (required upon hire).
  • ANCC-recognized certification in clinical specialty.
  • Depending on the unit/department, Pediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS), Adult Advanced Life Support (ACLS), and/or Emergency Nursing Pediatric Course (ENPC) may be required.

Schedule

Full-time, 40 hours per week. Four days a week, mostly 10-hour shifts, with one 12-hour shift when serving as Charge Nurse. One day off per week (Tuesday, Wednesday, or Thursday).

Pay

Pay is dependent on the applicant's relevant experience. Annual salary range (based on 40 hours per week): $105,046.99 to $157,570.49.
