Clinical Nurse (PER DIEM) - Emergency Services

About the role

The Clinical Nurse performs a variety of nursing care procedures requiring professional knowledge and consideration for specific patient conditions and treatments, with the ability to work independently. Nursing duties include support to individuals of all ages and their families, guided by physician’s orders, standards of care, and hospital policies.

Qualifications

• Associate of Science Degree in Nursing or Bachelor of Science Degree in Nursing
• Valid, current, full, and unrestricted Professional Nursing License to practice in any U.S. state, the Commonwealth of Puerto Rico, or a U.S. territory
• Current certifications (must maintain throughout employment):
  • Basic Life Support (BLS) – American Heart Association
  • Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) – American Heart Association
  • Pediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS) – American Heart Association
  • Neonatal Resuscitation Program (NRP) – required within one (1) year of hire
  • Trauma Nurse Core Course (TNCC) – required within one (1) year of hire
  • Emergency Nurse Pediatric Course (ENPC) – required within one (1) year of hire
  • NIH Stroke Scale (NIHSS) – must be completed within 6 months of hire
  • Emergency Severity Index Level 5 – within 3 months of hire
• Completion of Patient Sitter Competency Training (upon hire)
• One (1) year of registered nursing experience in an emergency department or critical care unit
• Record of satisfactory performance in prior and current employment, evidenced by positive references addressing:
  • Positive working relationships with others
  • High ethical standards and no history of complaints
  • Reliability and dependability in reporting to work as scheduled
• Knowledge of:
  • Normal growth, development, and life cycle changes
  • Physical, psychosocial, and behavioral characteristics of patient groups
  • Disease entities, complications, and therapeutic interventions
  • Assessment practices related to pain management and treatment modalities
  • Pharmaceuticals, including desired effects, side effects, and complications (emphasis on vasopressors and emergency medication titration)
  • Infection control procedures and safety precautions
• Successful completion of background checks, fingerprint clearance, physical examinations, and other screenings
• Submission of all required employment-related documents free of false, misleading, or incomplete information

Responsibilities

• Provide direct observation of patients as directed by the nursing plan of care
• Assist nursing staff in creating, maintaining, and providing a safe environment
• Develop and periodically evaluate individualized patient care plans
• Interview patients, family members, and consult with physicians to determine care needs
• Recognize adverse signs and symptoms and react promptly in emergencies, including life-saving procedures
• Carry out treatments and procedures within scope of practice
• Maintain accurate, efficient, and timely health records
• Provide counseling and teaching to patients and families on preventive, curative, and rehabilitative measures
• Foster positive working relationships and contribute to teamwork within the department
• Monitor and initiate corrective actions to maintain the environment of care, including equipment and material resources
• Maintain professional knowledge through continuing education, staff meetings, and workshops
• Adhere to compliance and quality assurance standards
• Participate in standards of care, Quality Assurance, and Infection Control activities/projects
• Identify clinical or operational performance improvement opportunities and engage in improvement activities
• Delegate tasks and supervise licensed and unlicensed care providers as appropriate
• Act as charge nurse for a group of patients or an entire unit when assigned
• Perform electronic health records data entry pertinent to patient service role
• Float to other units as needed
• Ensure proper PPE is worn and follow CDC guidelines for donning, doffing, and disposal
• Complete routine cleaning and decontamination processes for surfaces contaminated by communicable diseases
• Perform other duties as assigned

Mental and Physical Effort

• Physical demands:
  • Prolonged periods of standing, walking, talking, hearing, sitting, observing, and concentrating
  • Use of hands to finger, handle, or feel; bending, stooping, kneeling, crouching, and reaching
  • Lifting up to 50 lbs. frequently and moving/pulling/pushing over 100 lbs. with proper body mechanics and assistance
  • Ability to discern when to ask for assistance to prevent self-injury
  • Vision requirements: close, distant, color, peripheral, depth perception, and ability to adjust focus
  • Repetitive motion actions in feet and hands, including prolonged grasping and fine dexterity
• Mental demands:
  • Tact and sensitivity in stressful situations (e.g., death, dying, catastrophic illnesses)
  • Ability to prioritize, use good judgment, and coordinate multiple issues while frequently interrupted
  • Team-oriented attitude and willingness to assist others as needed

Environmental Conditions

• Prolonged exposure to toxic or caustic chemicals
• Occasional work in:
  • Wet, humid conditions (non-weather)
  • Near moving mechanical parts
  • Outdoor weather conditions, extreme cold, and extreme heat (non-weather)
  • Risk of electrical shock, radiation, and vibration
• Moderate noise levels
• Exposure to infectious diseases
