About the Role

Montefiore Medical Center's Division of Clinical Pathology is responsible for the laboratory testing of blood, urine, and body fluids for disease diagnosis and health maintenance. Utilizing the latest advances in computer technology, the Division maintains millions of dollars of state-of-the-art automated equipment at its laboratory sites and services hospitals, nursing homes, the Montefiore Medical Group, faculty practices, and voluntary physicians' offices at more than 40 sites.

Clinical Chemistry provides biochemical analysis of blood and urine for the determination of electrolyte status, diabetic control, markers of tissue damage, and other substances in serum and plasma that indicate a patient's degree of health or disease. The primary area of this position will be in the Protein separation and immunology Lab, with rotation through other Chemistry laboratories as needed.

Responsibilities

• Perform routine and emergency tests on blood, serum, spinal fluid, and other body fluids using automated and manual equipment, depending on procedure.
• Monitor specimens to ensure work is completed.
• Review data prior to release.
• Report all panic, abnormal, or critical values.
• Maintain quality control data on tests performed, resolve QC failures, and document actions as stipulated by laboratory procedures.
• Prepare reagents, take inventory, and advise supervisor as required.
• Maintain all records of work performed and keep maintenance logs of equipment.
• Assist with answering the telephone and perform order entry in the LIS system, as necessary.
• May have individual responsibility for the work of a laboratory unit and may provide leadership for technicians.
• Assist with the training of new employees.
• Maintain a clean work area in accordance with Infection Control guidelines.
• Perform other laboratory-related tasks under the direction of a supervisor as needed.
• In some instances, ability to stand or sit for extended periods of time is necessary.

Requirements

• Bachelor’s degree in a physical science; medical technology preferred.
• New York State Department Clinical Laboratory Technologist License or a limited permit required.
• Experience with laboratory and hospital information system computers, a variety of automated equipment, and other laboratory equipment.

Schedule

Evening shift: 3:30 PM – 12:00 AM (11:30 PM – 8:00 AM as noted), with alternate weekends. Scheduled daily hours: 7.5.

Pay

Hourly rate: $50.78. For positions that have only a rate listed, the displayed rate is the hiring rate but could be subject to change based on shift differential, experience, education, or other relevant factors.
