CLINICAL LABORATORY SCIENTIST I (Non-Competitive)
About the role
The position involves performing a variety of standardized clinical laboratory tests within a specialized area or across specialty lines, using manual or automated methodology, under the supervision of a physician or a Supervising Clinical Laboratory Scientist. Essential functions include calibrating laboratory instruments, overseeing the work of Laboratory Assistants, conducting specific biochemical tests, hematological tests, and immuno serological tests.
Responsibilities
- Calibrates laboratory instruments following prescribed methods and performs quality control and improvement procedures.
- Oversees the work of Laboratory Assistants.
- Performs specific biochemical tests on body specimens.
- Conducts hematological tests and microscopic examinations.
- Cultures, isolates, and identifies enteric pathogens and other micro-organisms.
- Draws, groups, types, and cross-matches donor-recipient blood.
- Performs antibody screening tests and related blood bank activities.
- Utilizes computer programs to enter test results and quality control data.
- Provides instructions to medical personnel on specimen collection.
- Trains licensed trainees and new laboratory scientists on detailed aspects of assignments.
Requirements
- Minimum requirements include a Clinical Laboratory Scientist license or Limited Clinical Laboratory Scientist Licenses issued by the State of California Department of Public Health in specialties such as chemistry, microbiology, hematology, toxicology, and immunohematology.
- Applicants must ensure the License and Certification Section of the application is completed and provide the title of the required license, certificate number, date of issue, date of expiration, and the name of the issuing agency.
- Licenses and certifications must be active and unrestricted.
- Out-of-state experience must be accompanied by the required license number.
- Physical demands include light physical effort, occasional light lifting up to 10 pounds, and some bending, stooping, or squatting.
