About the role
The Clinical Laboratory Scientist I is responsible for performing laboratory testing, recording and reviewing test results, preparing and labeling blood components. Essential responsibilities include adhering to SOPs and regulatory requirements, using the Blood Product Information System, and maintaining laboratory records.
Responsibilities
- Perform all tasks in compliance with Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs), current Good Manufacturing Practices (cGMPs) and other regulatory requirements.
- Properly use the Blood Product Information System, authorize and perform system overrides as needed, and escalate system problems to management.
- Accurately perform testing of blood products and donor samples (e.g., hematology counts (CBC), and pH).
- Accurately record, interpret, and report test results.
- Recognize and appropriately handle unacceptable test results.
- Verify acceptability of blood samples.
- Prepare and pack blood samples for send-out testing.
- Use laboratory equipment correctly.
- Maintain laboratory records; adhere to proper flow of paperwork.
- Prepare and perform proficiency testing (e.g., CAP).
- Accurately report errors.
- Evaluate blood component QC testing.
- Order and maintain proper inventory levels of laboratory supplies/reagents.
- Prepare laboratory statistical reports.
- Identify and troubleshoot problems encountered in assigned tasks and document corrective actions.
- Confer with managerial staff for resolution of problems, if necessary.
- Inform supervisory staff of any recommendations for process improvement.
- Read and understand company and industry manuals and compliance standards, including SOPs, FDA requirements (cGMPs) and AABB regulations.
- Follow safety rules relative to area(s) of responsibility.
Qualifications
- Education: Bachelor’s degree in biological, physical, or chemical sciences or medical technology preferred. New grads will be considered.
- Experience: At least 3 months of previous CLS working experience preferred.
- Licenses: Current California CLS Generalist license required. MT (ASCP) preferred.
- Skills: Proficient use of Microsoft Office products, including Word, Excel, Outlook, and PowerPoint. Ability to quickly learn new software programs as needed.
- Communication: Good command of the English language, clear and concise communication in both written and verbal formats.
- Mathematical: Ability to analyze and present quantitative data, compute basic mathematical equations.
- Reasoning: Analyze and interpret data, resolve issues and problems, exercise appropriate judgment to escalate issues to senior management, prioritize routine and non-routine work assignments.
- Physical Demands: Work in open areas with associated distractions, stand for 6-8 hours a day, sit for 6-8 hours a day, use hands to grasp, reach, and hold, lift up to 10 pounds, occasionally lift or move up to 50 pounds, wear PPE when exposed to bloodborne pathogens, waste, infectious material, dry ice, and liquid nitrogen.
Benefits
Pay ranges between $32-42/hr based on experience.
