Responsibilities
- Adhere to laboratory procedures for the collection, processing, analysis, and reporting of patient test results.
- Follow established quality control policies and procedures, documenting all corrective actions when necessary.
- Identify and address problems affecting test performance independently or notify supervisors.
- Perform a variety of laboratory procedures, including manual and automated methods in Hematology, Blood Bank, Chemistry, Urinalysis, Coagulation, Microbiology, Immunology, and other disciplines.
- Perform and document maintenance on instruments and equipment as needed.
- Review and verify the accuracy of patient results before release or reporting.
- Recognize and account for age-specific differences in expected results.
- Ensure proficiency testing samples are analyzed similarly to patient samples and collaborate only with the appropriate agencies.
- May perform venipuncture or capillary puncture on various age groups.
- Aid in the development and maintenance of laboratory policies and procedures.
- Comply with department and hospital policies related to safety, infection control, emergency preparedness, and human resources.
- In the absence of a supervisor, assume responsibility for the section or department during their shift.
- Assist with tasks related to Laboratory Information Systems (LIS) and/or Point-of-Care Testing (POCT).
Qualifications
- ASCP certification or equivalent, required within 18 months of employment.
- One year hospital laboratory work experience preferred, but not required.
- Bachelor’s Degree in chemical, physical, biological science, or Medical Laboratory Technology from an accredited institution, or other educational requirements as stated in CLIA (42 CFR 493.1489).
- Current and valid state license if the laboratory is located in a state where required.
