Clinical Lab Scientist - Blood Bank - Sharp Memorial - Evening Shift - Part Time

Shift start and end times are variable. Position requires an 8-hour shift within a 40-hour workweek. Weekend work is required every other weekend. On-call duty is not required.

Pay

The hourly pay range for this position is $49.70 – $71.82, with a midpoint of $64.13. The actual pay rate and pay grade will depend on factors such as years of experience, unique skills and abilities, education, alignment with similar internal candidates, marketplace factors, and employer business practices.

Responsibilities

• Provide technical knowledge, expertise, and judgment to support Sharp HealthCare’s laboratory services mission and scope.
• Analytical Testing Procedures:
  • Complete testing procedures using written policies and resources; identify and revise policies as needed.
  • Perform new procedures within acceptable training timeframes; meet or exceed department turnaround time goals.
  • Document activities and results thoroughly; proofread and double-check work to ensure zero defects and zero harm.
  • Review operational reports for clerical and analytical errors; correct errors as necessary.
  • Evaluate data for accuracy; investigate and follow up on questionable findings.
  • Perform pre-analytical (patient reception, sample collection, processing) and analytical procedures with consideration for patient age and population-specific needs.
  • Demonstrate critical thinking, emotional intelligence, and logical decision-making under stressful situations.
  • Serve as a key resource for employee/student training, development, and competency assessment.
  • Act as a key operator for testing, validation, analyzers, and technology.
  • Perform additional duties to meet operational needs; participate in writing and revising policies and procedures.
• Equipment Management:
  • Utilize equipment, analyzers, and tools per manufacturer instructions and established procedures; facilitate issue resolution.
  • Report, document, and resolve equipment/analyzer/tool/reagent issues promptly.
  • Remove defective equipment from use, document problems, and notify personnel for repair; verify equipment inspections are up-to-date.
  • Follow through on problem resolution and validate equipment performance post-repair.
  • Participate in analyzer and test methodology evaluation and selection; provide input in decision-making processes.
  • Demonstrate competency in tool applications (IS, PC, software) and equipment to produce end products efficiently.
  • Perform and validate preventive and corrective maintenance on equipment/analyzers/tools.
  • Manage inventory and evaluate consumables (reagents/supplies) to prevent shortages; alert ordering personnel.
• Quality Assurance:
  • Coordinate and complete processes to maintain quality testing standards; engage in continuous improvement.
  • Represent the laboratory department in entity or system committees, task forces, or workgroups.
  • Communicate clearly using tools like Closed Loop and SBAR.
  • Supervise work activities of Medical Lab Technicians, Certified Phlebotomy Technicians, and Laboratory Assistants; promote accountability, mutual respect, and teamwork.
  • Complete and assess QC performance, proficiency testing, test validation/calibration/linearity with corrective actions as needed.
  • Review quality assurance indicators and work with the team to meet or exceed established thresholds.
  • Complete and validate daily tasks within expected timeframes to meet QA indicator goals.
  • Identify errors, investigate, correct, document, and notify appropriate personnel.
  • Demonstrate self-awareness, including knowledge of strengths and weaknesses; set goals for self-improvement.
  • Perform shift lead duties as necessary; receive and provide thoughtful feedback.
  • Participate in regulatory and safety compliance activities as assigned.

Requirements

• California Clinical Laboratory Scientist (CLS) Generalist license or a CLS specialty license (e.g., Clinical Chemist, Clinical Microbiologist, Clinical Toxicologist, Clinical Genetic Molecular Biologist, Clinical Cytogeneticist, or Clinical Histocompatibility Scientist) issued by the CA Department of Public Health. License must align with the assigned department’s area.
• ASCP certification preferred.

Preferred Qualifications

• Experience working as a CLS in a clinical laboratory.
