Primary Duties
- Performs venipuncture and capillary puncture blood sample collections on patients of all age groups.
- Accurately identifies and labels all specimens following established laboratory protocol.
- Uses the laboratory information system and other reference laboratory’s web-based applications to independently solve complex issues in a sensitive, caring, and timely manner.
- Process all specimens in accordance with laboratory protocol including the proper handling, centrifugation, storage, packaging, and transport.
- Responsible for collecting all insurance/financial information necessary for proper billing.
- Accurately enters orders and patient demographic information in the laboratory information system.
- Works as a resource for training new phlebotomists at multiple locations.
- Adheres to department policies and procedures related to safety, food and beverages, infection control and the use of personal protective equipment.
- Keeps colleagues informed and communicates any unfinished tasks to the next shift appropriate personnel.
Requirements
- High School graduate or equivalent or applicable course work to be applied to obtain required WA State Medical Assistant-Phlebotomy (MA-P)- Certification.
- 3 years of experience working in a clinical laboratory role.
- Certification from an approved laboratory-training program with successful completion of a required internship preferred, or relevant work experience.
- Washington Medical Assistant-Phlebotomy (MA-P) upon hire.
Qualifications
- Previous training and competence in dealing with unique needs in the range of customer service situations with clinicians and their office staff.
- Working knowledge of the various government regulations specifically Medicare and the Washington state medical Test Site regulations.
- Working knowledge of the College of American Pathologists (ASCP) and the Joint Commission (TJC) inspection criteria.
Skills
- Effective communication among laboratory colleagues, clients, physicians, medical office staff and patients.
- Excellent customer service skills.
- Knowledge of AIDET (Acknowledge, Inform, Delegate, Thank, Escort).
