Clinical Instructor in Small Animal Emergency

About the Role

The Department of Small Animal Clinical Sciences at the University of Tennessee's College of Veterinary Medicine is seeking full-time clinical instructors in small animal emergency. The successful candidate will contribute to clinical care, teaching, and service missions while fostering an inclusive environment. This position supports the 24/7 emergency service and collaborates with a wide range of specialty services and advanced diagnostic resources.

Responsibilities

• Provide clinical care for patients presented to the emergency service.
• Contribute to the teaching mission of the college, including instruction of residents, interns, and students.
• Support and enhance the department’s reputation through excellence in patient care, teaching, and service.
• Work flexible hours to support the 24/7 emergency and critical care service.

Qualifications

• DVM or equivalent degree.
• Completion of a small animal internship or 1-2 years of practice experience.
• Enthusiasm for teaching, strong communication skills, and a collaborative mindset.

About the Facility

The University of Tennessee Veterinary Medical Center (VMC) is equipped with comprehensive specialty services, including:

• Internal medicine, oncology, neurology, neurosurgery, soft tissue and orthopedic surgery, ophthalmology, cardiology, dermatology, dentistry, radiology, nutrition, anesthesiology, physical therapy, behavior, radiation oncology, and zoologic medicine.
• Advanced diagnostic and therapeutic facilities, such as on-site MRI, CT, video endoscopy, laparoscopy, DEXA scanning, physical therapy, hyperbaric oxygen therapy, and a full-service in-house laboratory (endocrinology, virology, microbiology, parasitology, clinical pathology, and anatomic pathology).
• A full-time Veterinary Social Work program offering counseling services for clients, faculty, staff, and students.
• A state-of-the-art Teaching, Learning, and Simulation Instruction Center for skills practice.

The Emergency and Critical Care (ECC) service includes:

• Three diplomates in Veterinary Emergency and Critical Care, five ECC residents, and 28 licensed veterinary technicians (including 2 VTS ECC).
• Support from rotating interns, veterinary assistants, veterinary technician interns, and student workers.
• Advanced critical care equipment, including ventilators, high-flow oxygen therapy units, blood gas analyzers, point-of-care analyzers, ultrasound, telemetric ECG, and an in-house blood bank.
