About the role

Works in the build, implementation, troubleshooting, support of automation and technology to optimize pharmacy practice, pharmacy systems, and the medication-use process. Specializes in the medication process, from ordering to administration, and is responsible for effective process design, development, and implementation of the Electronic Medical Record and Clinical Decision Support.

Responsibilities

  • Supports pharmacists, physicians, nurses, and other clinicians as the resource for requests related to EMR and pharmacy system changes and additions.
  • Provides EMR related staff education and training.
  • Aids in the broader process of clinical systems implementation, problem identification and resolution through coordination and collaboration among physicians, clinical staff and Information Technology to ensure Pharmacy systems are interoperable and coordinated with the core systems in use.
  • Ensures appropriate testing of all integrated applications.
  • Ensures that knowledge-based information, which includes the scientific literature of healthcare, is appropriately considered and evaluated prior to implementation of software changes.
  • Partners with clinicians to identify and facilitate advanced clinical decision support implementation within the electronic medical record in order to meet clinical goals.
  • Participates in functional testing for human factors issues before and after system upgrades and improvements.
  • Assists in order set management: Development and maintenance of overall principles for safe design and use of order sets, with a focus on medications.
  • Develops and maintains standard order set clinical content, standards, patient safety principles, and evidence-based practice guidelines.
  • Promotes effective communication concerning medication use applications.
  • Assumes responsibility for the timely dissemination of information as related to pharmacy automation and technology.
  • Participates as a member of interdepartmental committees when requested and imparts knowledge related to pharmacy automation and technology.
  • Acts as a member of the development, prioritization, and determination of core clinical decision-support systems.
  • Ensures pharmacy systems are compliant with and support regulatory guidelines to include state and federal rules and regulations, The Joint Commission, Centers for Medicaid/Medicare Services and recognized pharmacy practice standards.
  • Supports pharmacy residency research activities.
  • Supports medical staff and allied health professionals for drug utilization data gathering and analysis.
  • Supports internal audits, billing, and financial analysis.
  • Participates in quality projects and on assigned committees to provide expertise on using the clinical information system to achieve goals.
  • Participates in the orientation, education, and mentoring of new staff as needed.
  • Designs and implements quality improvement changes to the organization’s medication-use system.
  • Oversees work of Pyxis Specialists and Application Specialists III that they directly work with.

Requirements

Four (4) years’ experience as a hospital pharmacist strongly preferred.

Qualifications

  • Doctor of Pharmacy degree from an AACP-accredited College of Pharmacy or Bachelor’s Degree from an AACP-accredited College of Pharmacy.

  • Ability to apply mathematical operations to such tasks as frequency distribution, single or multiple regressions, determination of test reliability and validity, correlation techniques, sampling theory and factor analysis.
  • Ability to apply principles of logical or scientific thinking to a wide range of intellectual and practical problems.
  • Ability to deal with nonverbal symbolism, (formulas, scientific equations, graphs, etc.).
  • Ability to deal with a variety of abstract and concrete variables.
