Clinical Imaging Engineer
About the Role
Under the general direction of the Clinical Technologies Imaging shop supervisor, the incumbent works as a technical leader performing a variety of routine and complex technical tasks associated with the installation, scheduled maintenance, and repair of a diverse range of imaging and clinical equipment (hardware, software, and databases). The incumbent performs scheduled maintenance on imaging systems using specialized test equipment, assists in the support of a systematic preventative maintenance program of biomedical instrumentation, and documents the introduction of new therapeutic and diagnostic imaging equipment, corrective and preventive maintenance actions, and special requests as required.
The incumbent must provide consultative and collaborative services to Clinical and Technology leaders of the various imaging departments by analyzing changing technical requirements, clinical needs, processes, and procedures for the development of maintenance programs on a variety of imaging systems. In discharging these responsibilities, the Imaging Engineer must be acutely aware of and adhere to all defined clinical workflows and will make recommendations on said workflows as needed. The incumbent will provide techno/functional assistance to imaging and biomedical technology users.
Department Overview
The Clinical Technology Division manages all diagnostic, therapeutic, and equipment processing technologies used in the delivery of patient care at UCSF Health. The Division’s primary obligation is to ensure this technology is wisely purchased; appropriately configured; performs properly, consistently, and safely; is routinely maintained; and is suitably and safely integrated with UCSF’s IT and EMR systems. The Division is organized into five functional areas:
- Clinical Technologies Administration (CTA): Responsible for the operational structure, Medical Equipment Management Plan (MEMP), UCSF Medical Equipment Policy 6.1.0, and the risk-based Equipment Classification system. CTA represents the MEMP in UCSF’s EOC committee, develops strategic plans, engages leadership for resource acquisition, identifies operational efficiencies, and creates the Division’s long-term roadmap.
- Biomedical Engineering Services (BES): Fulfills inventory, scheduled, and corrective maintenance duties. Organized into technical shops (Peri Op, Critical & Acute Care, Lab-Dialysis, Clinical Technologies Imaging, Depot & Field, Mechanical), each developing Service Level Agreements with customers and providing technical/labor support for projects.
- Clinical Systems Engineering Services (CSES): Centralizes clinical technology capital acquisition, interfaces with IT security and infrastructure, and provides 24-hour technical support for BES.
- Business-Analytics-Compliance Services (BACS): Manages the Division’s budget, service contracts, Computerized Maintenance Management System (CMMS), fiscal/regulatory compliance, and operational performance. Works with CSES on medical technology replacement cycles and collaborates on education/training programs.
- Program Management Group (PMG): Organizes and manages non-MEMP compliance technology programs, including Temperature/Humidity/RTLS, Stryker Integration, New Construction Installation Projects, and internal optimization initiatives.
Responsibilities
- Perform installation, scheduled maintenance, and repair of imaging and clinical equipment (hardware, software, and databases).
- Use specialized test equipment for maintenance on imaging systems.
- Support a systematic preventative maintenance program for biomedical instrumentation.
- Document new equipment introductions, corrective/preventive maintenance actions, and special requests.
- Provide consultative and collaborative services to Clinical and Technology leaders for maintenance program development.
- Analyze technical requirements, clinical needs, processes, and procedures for imaging systems.
- Adhere to and recommend improvements for clinical workflows.
- Provide technical and functional assistance to imaging and biomedical technology users.
Qualifications
Required Qualifications:
- Five (5) years of experience with an OEM or Hospital Biomedical department.
- Five (5) years of OEM, Third Party, or advanced Biomedical experience in Clinical Imaging Equipment.
Preferred Qualifications:
- Multi-vendor experience.
- Detail-oriented with demonstrated ability to manage time, prioritize tasks, and meet deadlines.
- Strong interpersonal and communication skills for training and supporting end users.
- Demonstrated problem-solving skills with the ability to diagnose issues and identify multiple resolution options.
- Working knowledge of operations and documentation protocols, analytical skills, and teamwork for system testing and program implementation.
- Working knowledge and moderate skills in relevant Clinical Imaging Systems (hardware, software, implementation, maintenance, user support, system testing, and evaluation). Required experience in at least 2 of the following modalities (preferred 3+):
- X-ray: General Radiography, Portables, C-arms, Minis, O-arms.
- Angiography/Fluoroscopy: Surgery (Cath/EP/IR), C-arms, O-arms.
- Ultrasound: Multi-vendor (GE, Siemens, Philips, Sonosite, Hitachi).
- Mammography.
- Nuclear Medicine.
- Bonedensitometer.
- Oncology.
- MRI: 1.5T-3T.
- CT: 64-256 slice.
- PET (CT and/or MRI).

Pay
The final salary and offer components are subject to additional approvals based on UC policy. Placement within the salary range depends on work experience and internal equity.
