Clinical Coordinator III / NP

About the Role

The Division of General Obstetrics & Gynecology at Columbia University is seeking a Nurse Practitioner to report to the Chief of the Division and Division Administrator. This individual will lead the medical management of patients, working closely with physicians to construct thoughtful differential diagnoses, tailor individualized and evidence-based treatment plans, and integrate preventive medicine and patient education into clinical care. The role includes overseeing patient care, reviewing medical records, addressing clinical concerns, conducting regulatory reporting, and participating in quality assurance and protocol development.

Responsibilities

• Patient Care Management and Documentation
  • Obtains and documents subjective history (interval or comprehensive) as appropriate to the chief complaint or reason for visit.
  • Works closely with physicians to provide high-quality, comprehensive patient care and assists with in-office procedures.
  • Conducts relevant physical exams, documenting pertinent positive and negative findings.
  • Writes prescriptions according to New York State and federal law.
  • Assesses and documents patient response to treatment and interventions.
  • Provides and documents health teaching oriented to the appropriate problem and/or developmentally age-appropriate health maintenance.
  • Consults and/or refers as per collaborative agreements/protocols and documents follow-up.
• Direct Patient Care
  • Develops an individual patient panel.
  • Tracks lab results to confirm appropriate follow-up.
  • Acts as a resource for patients requesting lab results and requisitions.
  • Triages patient phone calls and makes clinically related follow-up calls.
  • Uses EMR and optimizes EMR functions with IT.
  • Performs medication/supply tracking and expiration date follow-up.
• Quality Assurance
  • Conducts review of patient records in collaboration with peers and physician colleagues to determine quality and appropriateness of care provided.
• Patient Safety
  • Administers care in accordance with safety, environmental, and infectious control principles and regulations identified by the institution and legislative bodies.
  • Practices in accordance with legal parameters as delineated by collaborative agreement/practice protocols, including ordering and/or administering medication, intravenous fluids, blood, and blood products.
• Patient Rights
  • Demonstrates awareness and knowledge of patient’s rights and responsibilities while receiving care within the institution.
  • Demonstrates knowledge of the referral mechanism when a patient believes these rights have been violated.
• Education
  • Serves as a resource person and participates in staff development programs.
  • Participates in the education and mentorship of medical students, new NPs, and nursing staff.
  • Provides patient education and counseling on health status and treatment plans.
  • Serves as a clinical preceptor for students from selected programs.
• Research
  • Assists staff in developing appropriate quality improvement study designs for potential use in research.
  • Participates in quality improvement activities and approved research protocols.
  • Evaluates and implements relevant research findings.
• Coordination/Collaboration
  • Collaborates on clinical problems with nursing personnel, medical staff, or other healthcare providers.
  • Collaborates with interdisciplinary team members to determine and achieve health goals of patients and families.
  • Collaborates with administration and professional staff in the establishment and implementation of community services.
• Other Job Duties

Requirements

• Master’s degree or equivalent in education and experience.
• Five years of nursing or related experience.
• Current NYS RN and NP licensure.
• ANCC Board Certification as a Nurse Practitioner in the specialty of practice.
• Basic Life Support Certification for all Nurse Practitioners who provide direct patient care.
• Strong leadership, communication, and interpersonal skills to direct work, drive change, and collaborate effectively with patients and co-workers.
• Must maintain licensure throughout employment.
• Strong organizational skills and attention to detail.
• Excellent verbal/written communication and observation/listening skills.
• High level of professionalism and maturity, with the ability to work independently.

Preferred Qualifications

• 2-5 years of related experience in OBGYN.
• Experience with menopause care.
• Computer proficiency with the ability to quickly learn new applications.
