Job Summary

Adult Cardiac Surgeon – Advanced Heart Failure & Cardiac Transplant Surgeon at the Michigan Medicine Department of Cardiac Surgery. The Department of Cardiac Surgery, Section of Adult Cardiac Surgery, at the University of Michigan Medical School is recruiting a full-time cardiac surgeon with expertise in transplant, advanced heart failure, and VADs in addition to expertise in general cardiac surgery. Clinical responsibilities will be based at the Frankel Cardiovascular Center at the University of Michigan in Ann Arbor. Besides patient care, specific duties also include teaching medical students, house officers, fellows, and conducting/participating in research. The ideal candidate will be fellowship trained with an interest in resident and fellow education, as well as research and scholarly activity. This position provides the opportunity to be a transplant director in a prominent program at a leading academic health system.

Responsibilities

• Lead surgical strategy, performance, and growth for adult heart transplantation.
• Partner with heart failure cardiology, anesthesia, perfusion, and transplant department to drive outcomes, throughput, and patient experience.
• Leverage institutional capabilities in advanced donor pathways and organ preservation technologies (e.g., DCD platforms and perfusion innovation).
• Active involvement in resident/fellow/medical student teaching.
• Participate in clinical and translational research, including institutional and industry-sponsored studies.
• Demonstrated interest in heart failure/transplant research.
• Advance program development, quality initiatives, and innovation across heart transplant, LVAD, ECMO, and complex cardiothoracic surgery.

Qualifications

Required Qualifications

• MD or DO degree.
• Board certified/board eligible by the American Board of Thoracic Surgery (ABTS) or acceptable equivalents:
  • American Osteopathic Association (AOA)
  • Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada (RCPSC)
  • Royal Colleges as specified below:
    • Royal College of Physicians of London (RCP)
    • The Royal College of Surgeons of England (RCS)
• Completion of an ACGME-accredited cardiothoracic surgery residency.
• Proficient in all aspects of adult cardiac surgery with excellent technical skills.
• A proven track record of high-quality outcomes.
• Must hold or obtain a full, unrestricted medical license in the State of Michigan.

Desired Qualifications

• Heart transplant programmatic growth and outreach experience preferred.
• Track record in quality improvement, program development, and multidisciplinary alignment.
• Strong academic background and ability to contribute to education and scholarship.
• Expertise in donor evaluation and acceptance strategy, complex re-operative surgery, and high-acuity perioperative decision-making.
