About the Role

The Clinic Nurse is responsible for assisting the clinic providers with examination, evaluation and triage of individuals who are participants in research protocols that are conducted at START. The Clinic Nurse uses appropriate professional judgment and decision-making in planning and providing care. Nursing care is to be delivered in a manner consistent with the Standard Operating Procedures and standards of practice, and professional evidence-based standards.

Work Schedule & Location

  • Schedule: 7:00 am–5:00 pm CST, 3×10-hour shifts, W–F
  • Location: 800 Foremost Dr SE, Grand Rapids, Michigan

Essential Responsibilities

Patient Care

  • Perform telephone triage assessments of patients on trial when needed
  • Provide patient education regarding participation in a clinical trial, chemotherapy/immunotherapy/investigational agent administration and potential side effects
  • Enter patient history into the Electronic Medical Record based on records received and the patient provided history
  • Perform basic patient assessment including physical exam, vital signs, ECGs and other patient assessments as required
  • Use nursing assessment skills to observe participant's general well-being; document and take appropriate action as needed
  • Provide patients with visit summaries
  • Ensure that the dignity, health, safety, and welfare of participants are given the highest priority at all times
  • Coordinate patient care with internal and external staff
  • Respond to emergency situations based upon nursing standards
  • Provide coverage for Infusion Nurse as directed by management

Planning and Problem-Solving

  • Prepare for clinic day ensuring necessary supplies/results are available
  • Assist with prescription refills
  • Assist with entry and completion of quality standards for EHR/PQRS

Communication

  • Provide telephone triage
  • Assist with the training and mentorship of less tenured staff
  • Complete preauthorization forms for medications and treatments
  • Assist in the referral process to specialists
  • Communicate and interact with peers and other departments in a manner that is viewed as having a positive effect on patient services and staff morale
  • Interact effectively with patients/family members and demonstrate sensitivity in regards to cultural diversity, age specific needs and confidentiality

Protocol Management

  • Work with the physician to ensure that necessary labs and assessments are performed and results are available
  • Work with the physician to ensure that orders are completed

Technical and Quality

  • Working knowledge of a variety of health care procedures
  • Serve as a team member by expanding responsibilities as directed by management to facilitate optimal workflow within the cancer center
  • Time management and organizational skills
  • Effective written and verbal communication skills
  • Other duties may be assigned at any time

Required Education and Experience

  • High School Diploma or GED
  • Licensed Registered Nurse in practicing state
  • 1-year oncology experience
  • Basic Life Support (BLS) Certification, an AHA (American Heart Association) certificate
  • Experience working with Microsoft Office, including Teams, Excel, Outlook and Word

Preferred Education and Experience

  • Bachelor's degree of Nursing
  • Oncology Certified Nurse (OCN)
  • ONS/ONCC Chemotherapy Immunotherapy Certificate™ completed within the last 5 years or obtained within first year of employment
  • Clinical Trials experience
