About the role

To oversee patient flow in an effective, efficient, and timely manner from medical reception through screening, to the medical providers, to the lab, to other indicated patient stops, to the pharmacy, and out. Supervises screening activities and provides nursing support to assure quality and timely clinical care to patients.

Responsibilities

• Under the direction of the Medical Director, supervises the Medical Assistants to assure efficient, effective, and timely patient triage and flow from entering the clinic to exiting the clinic.
• Works with the Medical Director, medical providers, EMS Coordinator, and all screeners to ensure chief complaint(s), vital signs, and measurements are appropriately taken and recorded in the medical record before patients are assigned to an exam room.
• Reviews patient Electronic Health Records (EHR) summaries for clinical tests, exams, immunizations, etc., that may need to be performed.
• Works closely with the Community Health Nurse to ensure all community children are up to date on required immunizations and reinforces the importance of immunizations to parents.
• Participates in developing, maintaining, reviewing, and revising policies and procedures for clinic operations as part of the professional team.
• Monitors adherence to Infection Control policies and procedures and coordinates the infection control committee. Maintains records of reportable infectious diseases.
• Manages materials for the clinic, including knowledge of supplies needed, timely ordering, and ensuring exam rooms and clinical areas are stocked appropriately.
• Performs duties as an ambulatory/primary care nurse, including:
  • Providing nursing services to infants, children, adolescents, adults, and elderly patients in accordance with accepted nursing care standards.
  • Triaging, screening, and directing patients in the most effective, efficient, and timely manner; continually evaluating patient flow for improvement.
  • Administering required immunizations, TB skin tests, and injections as ordered by medical providers.
  • Assuring appropriate cleaning and sanitizing of reception and medical areas by custodial staff.
  • Providing chest and x-ray services within the scope of training and established protocols.
• Directly supervises Medical Assistants and/or substitutes, including:
  • Scheduling staff day-to-day and approving/denying leave to meet clinic demands.
  • Providing in-house job training and scheduling training programs to upgrade staff skills.
  • Evaluating and documenting staff performance of duties.
  • Initiating progressive procedures for performance deficiencies consistent with the ANSB Personnel Manual.
  • Reviewing timekeeping records of supervised staff for accuracy and completing ADP/Microix timekeeping sheets.
• Provides written reports detailing clinic activities as required; receives training in and utilizes the EHR for patient tracking and clinical data.
• Processes requisitions for supplies and equipment necessary for primary care services through the CHN, consistent with ANSB procurement procedures.
• Performs other duties as assigned.

Requirements

• Bachelor or Master of Science in Nursing with a Clinical Nursing component; current licensure as an RN in any state required. RN in the State of New Mexico within 90 days of hire.
• Associates Degree will be recognized if a New Mexico Registered Nurse License is possessed by the applicant.
• Proven experience in a nursing position in a clinical setting with supervisory responsibilities; experience in an outpatient/ambulatory care facility with children and adults preferred.
• Certification in Basic Cardiac Life Support.
• Knowledge of triage, ability to facilitate positive patient flow, administer immunizations and other injections, and audit and organize patient records.
• Navajo language ability preferred; experience in Indian health programs preferred.

Special Conditions

• This position is subject to fingerprinting and a criminal/character background investigation.
• New employees must provide documentation of immunization against tetanus, diphtheria, measles/rubella, and tuberculosis status by skin test or x-ray within thirty (30) days of hire.
• Authorized to provide services to non-Indians living within or near the Alamo Navajo community boundaries on a fee-for-service or third-party payment basis, provided it does not interfere with primary responsibilities.
• Deemed an employee of the Federal government while performing work under the Board’s Indian Self-Determination Agreement for purposes of Federal Tort Claims Act coverage.
• Any tort claim related to performance under this employment contract must be reported immediately to the Executive Director.

Pay

Bachelor’s degree is placed at Grade O; with Associates, Grade M; Master’s degree is placed at Grade P on the ANSB General Salary Scale.

Schedule

• Normal hours: 8 AM to 5 PM Monday through Wednesday, 8 AM to 7 PM Thursday, 8 AM to 3 PM Friday.
• Lunch hour: 12 PM to 1 PM.
