Job Summary

Performs and reports routine and special laboratory tests on clinical specimens to aid in the diagnosis and monitoring of patients.

Essential Functions

  • Performs analyses in hematology, chemistry, urinalysis, coagulation, blood bank and microbiology according to expected performance standards.
  • Performs venipuncture, finger stick, or heel stick on identified patients by physician's request in a timely, accurate and caring manner.
  • Keeps documented records current regarding maintenance and quality control.
  • Maintains records that demonstrate that proficiency testing samples are tested in the same manner as patient specimens.
  • Identifies problems that may adversely affect test performance or reporting of test results and either corrects the problems or notifies the appropriate supervisor.
  • Documents all corrective actions taken when test systems deviate from the laboratory's established performance specifications.

Knowledge/Skills/Abilities/Expectations

  • Comprehensive knowledge of applicable safety, quality control, and specimen handling guidelines and procedures.
  • Skilled in using applicable laboratory equipment such as centrifuges, meters, microscopes, incubators, pipettes, autoclaves, and sterilizers.
  • Ability to work quickly and accurately when under strict deadlines.
  • Considerable knowledge of the theory and practice of clinical laboratory methods and instrumentation.
  • Working knowledge of anatomy, physiology, laboratory medicine, disease processes, and laboratory procedures.
  • Ability to maintain confidentiality of all patient and/or employee information to assure patient and/or employee rights are protected.
  • Must read, write and speak fluent English.
  • Must have good and regular attendance.

Qualifications

  • Education: Bachelor's degree in a chemical, physical, biological science, or medical technology from an accredited institution.
  • Licenses/Certifications: Current license issued by the State in which the laboratory is located, if such licensing is required. Certification as a Medical Technologist or Medical Laboratory Scientist by a nationally recognized agency/board preferred.
  • Experience: 1-2 years of acute care hospital lab experience in high complexity testing preferred.

Pay Range
