Clinic Lab Assistant

Full-time, day shift position in an outpatient clinic setting.

About the role

The Clinic Lab Assistant performs phlebotomy and laboratory support services, ensuring quality and accuracy in accordance with regulatory standards and organizational mission, values, and performance expectations.

Responsibilities

• Perform phlebotomy procedures (venipuncture and capillary) and collect other specimens following proper protocols.
• Prepare, label, and process specimens, ensuring accurate documentation and adherence to regulatory and infection control guidelines (e.g., CLIA, COLA, OSHA).
• Conduct waived and routine lab testing; report and document results in the electronic health record, including critical values.
• Operate, maintain, and troubleshoot lab equipment; perform and document quality control and proficiency testing.
• Verify lab orders and medical necessities; complete ABNs and correct billing codes as needed.
• Accurately enter and manage data in the Electronic Health Record (EHR); review and correct billing reports.
• Maintain supply inventory; stock areas appropriately and communicate needs to supervisor.
• Provide patient-centered service by communicating test procedures, results, and follow-up instructions clearly and compassionately.
• Assist with clerical duties including faxing, copying, filing, scheduling, and answering phone calls.
• Support cross-coverage needs, within scope, throughout clinic/lab areas.
• Serve as a resource for colleagues and patients.
• Follow all safety, infection control, and universal precaution standards; maintain a clean and organized work area.
• Deliver patient care through patient preparation, vital sign collection, and documentation.
• Assist with various procedures, exams, and diagnostic equipment (e.g., tympanometry, spirometry).
• Maintain aseptic techniques during preparation, procedures, and medication administration.
• Other duties as needed and assigned by the manager.
• Maintain a working knowledge of applicable Federal, State, and local laws and regulations, Trinity Health’s Organizational Integrity Program, Standards of Conduct, as well as other policies and procedures.

Requirements

• High school diploma or equivalent (GED) required.
• Must be at least 16 years old.
• Completion of medical terminology or phlebotomy training preferred.
• Previous laboratory or phlebotomy experience preferred.
• Basic Life Support (BLS) certification from American Heart Association or Red Cross required within 30 days of hire; must be maintained.
• Mandatory Reporter training for Child and Dependent Adult Abuse required within 3–6 months of hire; must be maintained.
