About the Role
The Clinic Lab Assistant supports high-quality patient care by ensuring laboratory testing is performed accurately, efficiently, and cost-effectively. This position is responsible for assisting with laboratory operations, specimen collection and processing, and the timely delivery of reliable test results to healthcare providers. The Clinic Lab Assistant helps fulfill the department’s mission through a commitment to accuracy, service excellence, and patient-centered care in every aspect of the role.
Specimen Collection & Laboratory Testing
- Perform all phlebotomy procedures required for laboratory tests ordered through the clinic.
- Conduct clinic laboratory procedures in accordance with established policies, procedures, and quality standards.
- Ensure proper specimen collection, handling, processing, and disposition to maintain specimen integrity and accurate test results.
- Review, document, file, and communicate laboratory results according to established protocols.
- Notify healthcare providers of laboratory test results in a timely manner and ensure accurate charting of findings.
- Communicate laboratory results to patients as directed by healthcare providers while maintaining patient confidentiality.
Results Management & Patient Communication
- Manage and document laboratory results accurately and timely.
- Communicate results to healthcare providers and patients as required.
Documentation, Coding & Computer Operations
- Perform computer functions necessary for specimen tracking, results reporting, billing, and charge entry.
- Accurately diagnose and code laboratory tests for appropriate documentation and reimbursement.
- Maintain complete, accurate, and timely laboratory records and documentation.
Regulatory Compliance & Quality Assurance
- Maintain laboratory policy and procedure manuals and assist with updates as needed.
- Avoid non-compliance with regulatory, safety, confidentiality, and quality assurance standards.
- Follow established safety, infection prevention, and quality assurance standards.
Staffing & Operational Support
- Assist with scheduling and maintaining adequate laboratory staffing coverage during clinic operating hours.
- Support daily clinic operations and provide assistance with additional clinic functions as assigned by the Clinic Director.
- Collaborate with clinic staff to promote efficient workflow and exceptional patient care.
Requirements
- Meets all education, training, competency, and certification requirements established by the State of Kansas for laboratory testing personnel.
- Current certification or licensure as required by state and federal regulations, if applicable.
- Knowledge of laboratory procedures, specimen collection, and phlebotomy practices.
- Ability to maintain compliance with regulatory, safety, confidentiality, and quality assurance standards.
Qualifications

Skills & Capabilities
- Working knowledge of laboratory specimen collection requirements, handling procedures, and criteria for identifying and rejecting inadequate or compromised samples.
- Ability to accurately receive, interpret, and carry out orders from healthcare providers.
- Skill in performing phlebotomy procedures safely, accurately, and efficiently.
- Ability to demonstrate compassion, empathy, and professionalism while providing patient care and specimen collection services.
- Strong attention to detail to ensure accurate specimen identification, documentation, and test processing.
- Effective communication and interpersonal skills when interacting with patients, providers, and clinic staff.
- Ability to prioritize tasks, manage multiple responsibilities, and maintain productivity in a fast-paced clinical environment.
- Basic computer proficiency for laboratory documentation, specimen tracking, result reporting, and charge entry.
Position Details
- Schedule: Full-time, non-exempt position with the expectation to work 36-40 hours per week.
- Regular and punctual attendance is required.
- Physical Requirements: Occasional sitting, frequent standing, walking, bending, stooping, kneeling, lifting/carrying 10-25 pounds; frequent reaching/grasping, twisting, pulling/pushing, frequent exposure to sharp instruments and frequent exposure to equipment.
- Equipment: Ability to operate equipment safely and keep it in good working order with regular maintenance.
