Clinic Lab Assistant

About the role

The Clinic Lab Assistant performs phlebotomy and laboratory support services in an outpatient clinic setting. This role ensures quality and accuracy in accordance with regulatory standards and organizational mission, values, and performance expectations.

Responsibilities

• Performs phlebotomy procedures (venipuncture and capillary) and collects other specimens following proper protocols.
• Prepares, labels, and processes specimens, ensuring accurate documentation and adherence to regulatory and infection control guidelines (e.g., CLIA, COLA, OSHA).
• Conducts waived and routine lab testing; reports and documents results in the electronic health record, including critical values.
• Operates, maintains, and troubleshoots lab equipment; performs and documents quality control and proficiency testing.
• Verifies lab orders and medical necessities; completes ABNs and corrects billing codes as needed.
• Accurately enters and manages data in the Electronic Health Record (EHR); reviews and corrects billing reports.
• Maintains supply inventory; stocks areas appropriately and communicates needs to supervisor.
• Provides patient-centered service by communicating test procedures, results, and follow-up instructions clearly and compassionately.
• Assists with clerical duties including faxing, copying, filing, scheduling, and answering phone calls.
• Supports cross-coverage needs, within scope, throughout clinic/lab areas.
• Serves as a resource for colleagues and patients.
• Follows all safety, infection control, and universal precaution standards; maintains a clean and organized work area.
• Delivers patient care through patient preparation, vital sign collection, and documentation.
• Assists with various procedures, exams, and diagnostic equipment (e.g., tympanometry, spirometry).
• Maintains aseptic techniques during preparation, procedures, and medication administration.
• Other duties as needed and assigned by the manager.
• Maintains a working knowledge of applicable Federal, State, and local laws and regulations, as well as organizational policies and procedures to ensure adherence in a manner that reflects honest, ethical, and professional behavior.

Requirements

• High school diploma or equivalent (GED) required.
• Must be at least 16 years old.
• Completion of medical terminology or phlebotomy training preferred.
• Previous laboratory or phlebotomy experience preferred.
• Basic Life Support (BLS) certification from American Heart Association or Red Cross required within 30 days of hire; must be maintained.
• Mandatory Reporter training for Child and Dependent Adult Abuse required within 3–6 months of hire; must be maintained.
