About the Role

This position is a contingent social worker for the Medical Short Stay Unit and Emergency Department. Employees will be cross-trained to cover adult and children’s emergency departments, along with all inpatient hospitals. Hours will vary and there is no minimum number of hours per week guaranteed to contingent staff. The most successful candidates will have open availability for evening, night, and weekend coverage.

Responsibilities

  • Provide high-level interventions while also meeting basic tangible and concrete needs.
  • Crisis intervention.
  • Family support and counseling.
  • Liaison and referral to community agencies.
  • Mental health assessments.
  • Provide tangible resources.
  • Participation in team meetings.
  • Transitions of care including: hospice and durable medical equipment (DME).
  • Educational activities related to emergent needs of patients and their families.

Requirements

  • Master's degree in Social Work from a school accredited by the Council of Social Work Education.
  • Current clinical license to practice social work in the State of Michigan.
  • Clinical practice concentration and field practicum or recent work experience in a hospital required.
  • Ability to manage a large caseload with multiple competing demands.
  • Ability to work independently in a variety of stressful and demanding situations.
  • Critical decision-making, excellent assessments, brief interventions, and multi-tasking skills.

  • Significant medical social work experience.
  • Strong assessment skills.
  • Ability to establish therapeutic relationships quickly.
  • Ability to relate well to a diverse population.
  • Experience working with multidisciplinary teams and accessing community resources to facilitate discharge planning.
  • Experience providing crisis intervention and grief counseling.
  • Brief interventions to facilitate patient and family participation in appropriate health care decision making.
