About the role
The position is located within the Downtown Action Team (DAT) department of the Public Works and Utilities division in Bradenton, Florida. It is a non-exempt, essential position requiring immediate response during emergencies.
Responsibilities
- Perform routine semi-skilled work in maintenance and repair of streetscape facilities, grounds, and equipment in the Downtown Corridor.
- Assist in the installation and maintenance of amenities like planters, benches, bike racks, trash receptacles, and other landscaping elements.
- Operate maintenance and related equipment for tasks such as mowing, edging, weeding, trimming, blowing, pressure washing, and applying surface sealants.
- Manage landscapes, shrubs, trees, sprinkler systems, and other grounds maintenance tasks.
- Participate in traffic control and safety measures in high traffic areas.
- Prepare, install, repair, and replace city signs and posts; install and maintain street banners.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
Requirements
- High school diploma or GED equivalent.
- Valid Florida driver’s license with a good driving record.
- Ability to operate various hand-held tools and repair equipment.
- Good physical condition to perform heavy manual labor in confined and cramped spaces.
- Ability to work in varying and extreme weather conditions for extended periods.
Physical Abilities
- General knowledge of safe work techniques and practices.
- Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships.
- Ability to understand and follow oral and written instructions.
- Ability to add, subtract, multiply, and divide in all units of measure.
- Ability to lift up to 50 pounds and occasionally lift up to 80 pounds.
- Specific vision abilities required: close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, and ability to adjust focus.
- Ability to work in close, confined spaces, walk, stand, stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl, talk, hear, reach above shoulders, work overhead on ladders and platforms, use fingers and hands with dexterity, and feel and reach with hands and arms.
- Ability to work in close proximity to sewage systems, human debris, drug paraphernalia, hot tar and asphalt, heavy equipment, working in and around trenches, hazardous gases, fumes, paint, chemicals, and pesticides.
- Ability to work in environments with slippery and/or uneven surfaces; heights above twenty (20) feet; below ground level, with feet, legs and/or hands in water; and occasional exposure to confined spaces.
- Subject to 24-hour call back for emergency conditions.

Schedule
This position may work irregular shifts, day or night, weekday or weekend, and requires scheduled/unscheduled overtime, including evenings, weekends, and holidays, and immediate response to emergency conditions. Differential shift pay is provided as applicable per the most current AFSCME contract.
Pay
The compensation range for this position is up to $24.67 per hour, based on experience and qualifications.
