About the Role

As a Classroom Assistant Teacher, you will work closely with the Classroom Teacher to support the educational and developmental needs of children in accordance with Creative Curriculum Standards, Head Start Performance Standards (HSPS), State Licensing Mandates, and UMOS Policies and Procedures.

Responsibilities

  • Schedule, complete, and track required home visits/conferences, developmental screenings, ongoing assessments, and timely online entry of classroom observations and documentation.
  • Collaborate with the classroom teacher to create and update individualized plans with parents to address each child’s needs and track progress.
  • Guide and facilitate children’s activities, including daily routines, field trips, and arranging classroom equipment and materials.
  • Assist in setting up, maintaining, and preparing/cleaning both indoor and outdoor environments.
  • Support the implementation of children’s I.E.P. (Individual Education Plan) or I.F.S.P. (Individual Family Service Plan) and seek clarification for unclear aspects.
  • Assist the teacher in completing required reports on children and classroom activities.
  • Maintain written and verbal communication with families regarding developmental progress and other pertinent information.
  • Communicate effectively with children during activities and routines, using appropriate tone, eye level engagement, and modeling to extend their thinking and language.
  • Participate in Family Style Meal Service, assisting children in developing social and self-help skills, sound nutritional practices, and required documentation per the Child Adult Care Food Program.
  • Follow health and safety policies, including storage of hazardous materials, health/safety checklists, daily child observation, diapering/toileting/handwashing, injury prevention, accident reporting, sanitizing, cleaning, and universal precautions.
  • Work with the classroom teacher to generate and collect non-federal share (In-kind).
  • Maintain positive guidance and behavioral management techniques, ensuring direct sight and sound supervision of all children.
  • Communicate with bus drivers/monitors about children’s daily activities, behaviors, and assist in loading/unloading children from the school bus.
  • Attend staff meetings, trainings, in-service sessions, and center activities as assigned.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Requirements

  • Be 18 years of age or older.
  • Hold a valid High School diploma or GED certificate.
  • Possess a Preschool (PS) Child Development Associate (CDA) credential or state-awarded certificate that meets/exceeds CDA requirements, or be enrolled in a CDA program immediately upon acceptance (must complete within 1 year).
  • Some childcare experience is preferred.
  • Strong oral and written communication skills.
  • Bilingual in Spanish and English (oral and written) is preferred.
  • Basic computer skills, including data entry and internet use.
  • Reliable transportation, valid driver’s license, and adequate car insurance.
  • Ability to work flexible, irregular hours with some travel.

  • Occasionally required to ride the school bus and exposed to bumpy travel conditions.

  • Phones, computer systems, fax machines, copy machines, laminators, and calculators.
  • First aid equipment and fire extinguishers.

Additional Eligibility Requirements

Employment with UMOS is contingent upon successful completion of:

  • Criminal background check prior to employment.
  • Physical exam and TB screening test showing absence of Tuberculosis within 30 days of employment (or sooner if required by local/state regulation).
  • SIDS & Shaken Baby Training prior to working with children.
  • Fire Extinguisher Training.
  • Proof of certification in Infant/Child CPR and First Aid within 30 days (or sooner if required by local/state regulation).
  • Registration in the state childcare registry.
