About the role

To serve our customers by safely and efficiently transporting product from the warehouse by driving a tractor trailer to various customers and properly delivering and unloading product according to customer invoices and company standards.

Pay

• Earn an average of $115,000 per year
• Top earners make up to $140,000
• Route Pay + Incentives = SYGMA Top Dollars

Schedule

• Evening dispatch, Sunday – Friday
• 2 to 4 routes per week
• Overtime, weekends, holidays, and on-call may be required
• Start times vary to meet customer needs

Responsibilities

• Safely transport product from the warehouse to customer locations, ensuring timely delivery according to assigned routes
• Unload product from trailer by hand or using a hand cart, navigating ramps, stairs, or docks in all weather conditions, and place in designated customer storage areas
• Pick up, load, and unload damaged goods and customer returns, transporting them back to the SYGMA warehouse
• Complete all required paperwork accurately and on time, including DOT logs, inspections, vehicle maintenance reports, pre- and post-trip reports, invoices, and damage/shortage reports
• Ensure food safety protocols are followed, including maintaining proper temperatures, inspecting product for damage, and preventing cross-contamination
• Maintain sanitary conditions in the tractor, trailer, warehouse, and yard
• Follow preferred work methods and report unsafe conditions to management
• Operate assigned equipment safely, including hand carts, pallets, load bars, SLS units, and personal protective equipment
• Build and maintain good customer relationships through excellent and courteous service with clear communication
• Communicate with management about route deviations, trailer or loading issues, and customer or product concerns
• Safely transport backhauled and line-haul product, ensuring timely and correct delivery
• Work assigned schedule and additional hours as needed to meet customer needs; maintain regular and predictable attendance
• Perform other duties as assigned by management

Requirements

• High school diploma, GED, or equivalent degree
• 1 year of tractor trailer driving experience preferred (completion of a tractor trailer driving school may substitute)
• Valid Class A Commercial Driver’s License
• Must be insurable to operate a vehicle as a condition of employment
• Ability to read, write, and communicate in English for safety regulations, traffic signs, and job-related tasks
• Ability to perform basic math functions (addition, subtraction, multiplication, division)

Skills

• Knowledge of: DOT regulations, Hazmat guidelines, safe lifting and delivery practices
• Skill in: Driving long distances and in varying weather/terrain, communicating with customers, problem-solving, delivering product
• Ability to:
  • Drive a tractor-trailer day or night in various traffic and weather conditions while remaining alert
  • Meet or exceed company productivity standards
  • Handle hazardous materials and food items (frozen, dry, refrigerated)
  • Operate a 3-axle tractor, 45'–48' trailer, straight truck, on-board computer, keypad, and 2-wheel hand cart
  • Plan and organize work independently
  • Solve problems effectively

Physical Demands

• Regularly required to sit, talk, and hear
• Frequently required to lift, push, or move product up to 50 pounds by hand and push/pull up to 350 pounds with a 2-wheeled hand cart
• Climb in and out of a tractor and trailer
• Reach to stack/unstack pallets and hand carts
• Bend and twist while loading/unloading product and retrieving items from the trailer
• Specific vision abilities required: close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and ability to adjust focus

Work Environment

• Occasionally exposed to wet, hot, extreme cold, and/or humid conditions
• Occasionally exposed to moving mechanical parts and confined spaces
• Overnight schedule, including weekends, holidays, and overtime
• Occasionally exposed to high, precarious places, fumes, or airborne particles
• Moderate noise level in the work environment
